Job Purpose:
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a Ruby on Rails–focused squad. This role blends technical leadership with people management to deliver scalable backend systems, support product strategy, maintain engineering excellence, and nurture team growth.
What You’ll Do:
Engineering management at Easyship is built on four pillars:
People Management
- Grow, coach, and retain backend/frontend engineers with clear goals, regular feedback, and defined career paths.
- Set high standards for code quality, ownership, and collaboration—model honesty, transparency, and “help each other win.”
- Run effective 1:1s, assess performance, and make staffing/leveling decisions
Process Management
- Establish lightweight, predictable workflows (Scrum/Kanban as suitable).
- Improve delivery flow: reduce cycle time, increase throughput, and keep WIP manageable.
- Prioritize quality: definitions of ready/done, code review best practices, testing strategy, release discipline, and incident response.
Project & Delivery Management:
- Co-own the domain roadmap with Product and Design, translating strategy into sequenced deliverables.
- Lead cross-team projects (APIs, shared services, migrations) with clear communication and risk management.
- Ensure timely delivery, measurable impact, and alignment with business objectives
Technical Leadership
- Provide architectural guidance on system design, API contracts, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Advocate modern engineering practices (DDD, event-driven design, observability, CI/CD, security by design).
- Balance short-term delivery with long-term architectural health, including tech debt management.
How You’ll Be Measured:
- Delivery predictability: Sprint/quarter commitments met, dependency risks mitigated.
- Engineering health: Cycle time, PR review latency, change failure rate, MTTR.
- Quality & reliability: Defect trends, alert fatigue, SLO/SLA adherence.
- People & culture: Engagement, retention, career growth, hiring quality.
- Business impact: Measurable outcomes linked to revenue, cost, or customer experience.
Who You are:
- 12+ years in backend engineering with strong Ruby on Rails and SQL expertise.
- 2+ years of leadership experience managing teams while remaining technically hands-on.
- Skilled in system architecture, scalability, reliability, and test frameworks.
- Clear communicator with strong organizational and strategic thinking skills.
- Adept in Agile methodologies and cross-functional collaboration.
- Strong mentoring ability and a commitment to technical excellence.
Nice to have:
- Proficient with Git/GitHub workflows, Docker/Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (GCP preferred; AWS/Azure acceptable).
- Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis/Sidekiq, RabbitMQ, ElasticSearch, and GCP infrastructure.
What You’ll Get:
- Competitive Equity Package: Earn more than just a competitive salary. Receive equity shares to gain wealth as the company grows.
- Gym & Wellness Reimbursement: Training for a big race? Don’t sweat it. We offer gym reimbursement for all employees.
- Generous Vacation Policy: We think time off is essential… and we encourage it!
- Duvet Day: Perfect for those cold winter days, when you don’t want to escape the warmth of your bed!
- Mental Health Day: You deserve a day off! A chance to recharge and enjoy ‘Me Time’
- 4 weeks of ‘Work from Anywhere’: Whether you’re working from the beautiful beaches in the Bahamas or by the fireplace on your ski trip in Switzerland - just make sure to send us a picture!
