About this role

What You'll Do:

• Own the next-gen search/recommendation engine – combine large-language-model (LLM) embeddings, vector search, and reinforcement learning to serve hyper-personalized product feeds in < 100 ms.
• Architect retrieval-augmented-generation (RAG) pipelines that power our new AI shopping assistant and on-site copy generation tools.
• Lead technical strategy across Discovery, Search & Ads, partnering with infra to productionize GPU/TPU inference (Triton, TorchServe, Ray, K8s).
• Mentor senior ML & data scientists; champion best practices for LLM safety, bias testing and observability.

Qualifications

• 7 + years building large-scale AI/ML systems, with at least 3 years on recommendation, search or ads ranking.
• Hands-on with deep-learning libraries (PyTorch/JAX) and vector retrieval stacks (Faiss, ScaNN, Pinecone, Milvus).
• Shipped models that blend large language models (BERT/GPT-class, Mistral) with structured signals for personalization.
• Comfortable reading a new research paper at lunch and pushing a prototype before dinner.
• Strong coding skills in Python and a bias for production ownership, not throw-over-the-wall research.
• Stellar communication and a record of cross-team influence—exactly what a staff-level engineer at Faire means.

Great to Haves:

• Contributions to open-source ML frameworks or peer-reviewed publications.
• Experience with streaming feature stores (Feast, Kafka, Flink) and real-time feedback loops.
• MS/PhD in CS, Stats, or a related STEM field.

Salary Range:

California & New York: the pay range for this role is $224,000 to $308,000 per year. 

This role will also be eligible for equity and benefits. Actual base pay will be determined based on permissible factors such as transferable skills, work experience, market demands, and primary work location. The base pay range provided is subject to change and may be modified in the future. 

Effective January 2025, Faire employees will be expected to go into the office 2 days per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Additionally, hybrid in-office roles will have the flexibility to work remotely up to 4 weeks per year. Specific Workplace and Information Technology positions may require onsite attendance 5 days per week as will be indicated in the job posting.
