Robinhood is looking for a world-class Privacy attorney to lead our Privacy & Data Protection Legal team and who will have a key role in promoting a culture of privacy and data protection within the organization. In this role, you will lead and develop a team of attorneys and program managers and work collaboratively with legal colleagues and business, security, and engineering partners to ensure that our business practices adhere to privacy laws and regulations globally. We are looking for a highly adaptable and collaborative person who can handle ambiguity and rapidly shifting priorities with flexibility, patience and creativity. This role is based in our Washington, DC, Menlo Park, CA or New York, NY office(s), with in-person attendance expected at least 4 days per week.

What you’ll do

  • Serve as lead attorney on domestic and international privacy and data security within the legal and compliance team
  • Manage, empower, and develop a team of attorneys and program managers
  • Develop and be responsible for implementation of privacy strategies and policies in compliance with international, federal and state privacy and consumer protection laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, GLBA), and ensure that our policies and practices keep pace with regulatory changes and industry standard processes
  • In collaboration with Robinhood’s litigation and regulatory enforcement team, establish regulatory response strategies for privacy and data protection
  • Collaborate with legal and compliance colleagues, the Chief Privacy Officer, and technical and operational teams to develop, enhance and implement Robinhood’s privacy program and data protection policies and procedures globally
  • Assist product teams in evaluating the impact of privacy and data protection laws, regulatory guidance and enforcement actions, and other related guidelines on product features
  • Partner cross-functionally with marketing, product, and government affairs teams on key growth and strategic privacy initiatives
  • Partner with the commercial and employment legal teams to ensure appropriate data protection provisions are incorporated into vendor, partner and employee agreements
  • Draft and supervise the development and management of Robinhood’s terms and data policies; draft and update privacy policies, template agreements and other foundational resources to promote compliance with evolving regulatory requirements in the US and international markets as Robinhood expands globally

What you bring 

  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school (or foreign equivalent)
  • Membership in at least 1 U.S. State Bar, with good standing
  • 15+ years of legal practice experience, with at least 8+ years specializing in privacy law
  • 5+ years of proven experience managing, inspiring, and growing high performing teams
  • Experience with technology and/or financial services companies, both in-house as well as at a world-class law firm
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and to tolerate change and ambiguity
  • Demonstrated expertise building and scaling compliant privacy programs in a technology-first and risk-based way
  • Ability to translate sophisticated legal concepts to into practical and actionable advice for a nonlegal audience

In addition to the base pay range listed below, this role is also eligible for bonus opportunities + equity + benefits.

Base pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected base pay range for this role is based on the location where the work will be performed and is aligned to one of 3 compensation zones. For other locations not listed, compensation can be discussed with your recruiter during the interview process.

Base Pay Range:

Zone 1 (Menlo Park, CA; New York, NY; Bellevue, WA; Washington, DC)

$255,000 - $300,000 USD

Zone 2 (Denver, CO; Westlake, TX; Chicago, IL)

$224,000 - $264,000 USD

Zone 3 (Lake Mary, FL; Clearwater, FL; Gainesville, FL)

$199,000 - $234,000 USD
