About the Principal Engineer role

In this position, you will serve as a technical leader focused on our Recommerce Warehouse Management System (ReWMS), the critical infrastructure powering our recommerce operations. You will architect and evolve ReWMS to efficiently handle inventory processing, order fulfillment, and warehouse operations that are essential to giving products multiple lifecycles. As a Principal Engineer, you'll balance technical innovation with operational stability, ensuring ReWMS can scale to support growing business volume while maintaining performance and reliability. Your work will directly impact our ability to process second-hand goods efficiently, a cornerstone of our sustainable retail mission.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Architect and evolve our Recommerce Warehouse Management (ReWMS) System to support increasing scale and complexity of warehouse operations
  • Design robust integrations between ReWMS and other critical systems (e-commerce platform, 3PLs and ERPs)
  • Lead technical decisions regarding ReWMS customizations, extensions, and optimizations to support unique recommerce workflows
  • Partner with warehouse operations teams to translate their requirements into technical solutions
  • Establish monitoring, observability, and reliability practices for mission-critical ReWMS components
  • Mentor and guide engineers working on ReWMS-related projects and initiatives
  • Create technical roadmaps for ReWMS enhancements that align with business growth objectives

 

Experience You Bring

  • Strong experience designing and implementing warehouse management systems or similar logistics/supply chain technologies
  • Deep understanding of inventory management, order processing, and fulfillment workflows
  • Track record of optimizing system performance in high-volume transaction environments
  • Experience with asynchronous processing, queueing systems, and distributed system design
  • Knowledge of database design and optimization for inventory and order management use cases
  • Ability to balance technical elegance with pragmatic solutions that solve immediate operational needs
  • Excellent communication skills to bridge the gap between warehouse operations and engineering teams
  • Passion for sustainability and the circular economy, with a drive to build technology that makes recommerce more efficient and scalable

 

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Experience with specific WMS platforms or logistics software (Manhattan, HighJump, etc.)
  • Background in designing systems that handle unique recommerce challenges like product condition grading or authentication
  • Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Prior experience working at a startup

Trove is committed to creating an equitable and transparent workplace. The annual compensation range for this position is $190,000 - $234,000 and equity. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, location and skills and may vary from the range listed above.
