Back End Engineer
540 is looking for a Back End Engineer to help the DoD build new capabilities for an Air Force integration platform powered by Apigee and Google Cloud. Software engineers on this project will develop microservices that interact with key components of the Air Force maintenance system. These microservices will run on Google Kubernetes Engine using Kafka to produce highly-available, real-time data that has important data insights for key decision makers at the highest levels.
Location: Remote within the continental United States. East Coast working hours with some flexibility afforded
Citizenship & Clearance Requirement: per client requirements, must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance
Education Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related engineering field (preferred)

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- 5+ years of software development experience
- Experience with the following:
- Java
- Spring / Spring Boot
- Microservices using Kubernetes/Docker
- Kafka / Asynchronous Messaging
- Gradle / Maven
- JSON
- Proficiencies in RESTful API design, building and consumption
- Ability to learn quickly and “become an expert” on something that you don’t have previous knowledge/experience on
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient and experienced in individually producing deliverable-quality design artifacts using Google Docs and Lucidchart (or similar tools)
- Ability to work independently (as if on an island) with clients, but also be a consummate team player
- Ability to take into account the needs of tomorrow while looking forward to potential product requirements years in the future
- Can take ownership of tasks and drive them to completion (ie, figure out the next steps without being told explicitly)
NICE TO HAVE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience working on federal programs (particularly, Department of Defense)
- Understanding of core principles of cloud architectures and experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Experience working with SOAP-based APIs
- Experience with API Gateways and API Management platforms such as Google Apigee
- Understanding of various methods of authentication and authorization via APIs (PKI, OAuth2, JWT, LDAP, SAML, etc)
- Experience with OpenAPI (fka Swagger)
