Data Engineer
540 is seeking a Data Engineer to join our growing data team supporting high-impact federal missions. This role offers an opportunity to build and strengthen cloud-based data engineering skills while contributing to meaningful projects in an AWS environment.
In this position, you’ll help develop and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure, collaborate with teammates across the delivery team, and learn from more experienced engineers as you continue to expand your technical capabilities.
Location: Remote within the continental United States. Core collaboration hours align with Eastern Time, with flexibility. Occasional travel (3-4x annually)
Citizenship & Clearance Requirement: per client requirements, must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance
Education Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related engineering field (preferred)

HOW YOU’LL DRIVE IMPACT
- Develop and maintain data pipelines and ETL processes using Python in AWS environments
- Write and deploy AWS Lambda functions for data processing tasks
- Assist in designing and implementing data integration solutions from various source systems
- Collaborate with team members using Git for version control and code collaboration
- Write efficient SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, and validation
- Participate in code reviews to learn best practices and improve code quality
- Document technical processes, data flows, and system configurations
- Troubleshoot data quality issues and implement validation checks
- Support the monitoring and maintenance of production data pipelines
- Continuously learn new technologies and AWS services to expand technical capabilities
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- 2+ years of experience in data engineering, software development, or related technical roles
- Working knowledge of Python programming and ability to write clean, maintainable code
- Basic understanding of AWS cloud services and architecture
- Familiarity with Git version control systems
- Proficiency in SQL and understanding of relational databases
- Knowledge of data structures and algorithms
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Eagerness to learn and grow in a collaborative team environment
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team
- Currently possess or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire:
- AWS Cloud Practitioner certification (or higher)
- CompTIA Security+ certification (or higher)
NICE TO HAVE
- Hands-on experience with AWS services such as Lambda, S3, Step Functions, Glue, or RDS
- Familiarity with X12/MILS processing
- Exposure to data warehousing or analytics platforms
- Understanding of REST APIs and data integration concepts
- Coursework or experience with big data technologies
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
- Personal or academic projects demonstrating data engineering skills
