Summary:

The Controller is a key member of the executive team, responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the club’s operations to ensure its long-term financial stability and growth. This individual will provide strategic financial leadership, oversee financial planning, reporting, and budgeting, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of the unique financial needs of private, high-end golf clubs and can balance fiscal responsibility with delivering exceptional member experiences.

 

Job Specific Responsibilities and Duties:

Financial Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the club’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives
  • Collaborate with leadership to set financial goals and assess performance against them
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support decision-making and operational improvements
  • Assess and onboard systems and vendors for start-up phase of the club

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP
  • Develop and maintain an effective internal control system to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and provide regular variance analyses

Treasury & Risk Management

  • Manage the club’s cash flow and banking relationships
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize the club’s financial performance, including cost controls and revenue enhancement initiatives
  • Monitor and manage financial risks, including insurance and compliance with legal and tax regulations

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability
  • Work collaboratively with department heads to establish and maintain sound financial practices throughout the club

Member & Board Relations

  • Present financial results and forecasts to the Board of Directors and key committees (e.g., Finance, Audit)
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to members, addressing financial inquiries and supporting capital improvement initiatives

 

Qualifications:

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA/CPA preferred).
  • CPA or CMA certification strongly preferred

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in accounting or financial leadership roles, with at least 3 years in the private club, hospitality, or luxury service industry
  • Proven track record in managing financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and analysis

Skills & Competencies

  • Expertise in GAAP, tax compliance, and financial reporting requirements
  • Exceptional analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in financial software and Microsoft Office Suite, with experience in club-specific systems (e.g., Jonas, Clubessential) a plus
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with members, staff, and board members
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism
