Embedded Systems Engineer Intern
We are looking for Embedded Systems Engineer Intern to work on developing a hardware and software system for real-time audio enhancement applications, and the position is available as early as December 2024. With AAVAA, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team building a unique listening device that allows everyone to hear what matters by processing their surrounding sounds based on input from their brain and biosignals. Our goal is to give people control of their auditory environment, enhance the sounds they want to hear, and suppress distracting noise. In addition to solving one of the biggest challenges of human health, you will get:
- A safe, healthy, and inclusive work environment
- Healthy snacks, frequent celebrations, endless tea and latte, social outings, and more!
We are looking for problem solver engineers who have a collaborative and meticulous spirit. Applicants of all levels are welcome, including Senior Leads, Engineers, and Postdoctoral Candidates residing in Canada. AAVAA is a Montreal start-up dedicated to increasing diversity in technology; therefore, candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Please see below for requested areas of experience.
Basic skills:
- Develop embedded systems utilizing DSPs and ARM cores, tailored for high-performance AR/VR applications.
- Lead schematics capture and PCB design efforts to ensure robust and functional hardware designs.
- Engage in firmware & hardware programming and debugging, focusing on system reliability and performance.
- Utilize standard electrical design tools such as KiCad and Altium for design and simulation purposes.
- Implement and manage serial communication interfaces like SPI, I2C, UART, and USB for device interactions.
- Proficiently hand-solder surface mount devices to assemble and test prototype hardware.
- Design and implement software solutions in a FreeRTOS environment, optimizing for system constraints.
- Demonstrate strong coding abilities in C++, C, Python, and Matlab to support AR/VR system functionality.
- Develop drivers and support software for new display components.
- Conduct performance optimization and power consumption analysis for display systems.
- Keep up-to-date with the latest AR/VR trends, technologies, and best practices.
Preferred skills:
- Design and troubleshoot mixed-signal circuits incorporating both digital and analog elements.
- Handle sound capturing and processing using I2S/SAI interfaces, particularly relevant in the AR/VR space.
- Evaluate and select appropriate DSP platforms, considering the trade-offs for embedded AR/VR systems.
- Apply expertise in consumer audio electronics and acoustics to enhance the auditory components of AR/VR systems.
- Proficient use of Github for collaborative development, version control, and code sharing.
- Experience with display technologies such as OLED, LCD, micro-LED, or holography.
- Familiarity with AR/VR hardware and software ecosystems.
- Knowledge of digital signal processing and image processing techniques.
Above and beyond:
- At least 1 year of embedded systems development experience, with a focus on AR/VR technology.
- Advanced knowledge of audio data converters (ADCs, DACs, and codecs) to deliver superior audio experiences.
- Specialized in speech enhancement technology, including but not limited to noise reduction, acoustic echo cancellation, and advanced microphone array processing techniques.
- Proven track record in the industrial design of compact electronic devices, such as hearing aids or Bluetooth audio peripherals.
- Experience with the development of automatic speech recognition systems to enhance user interaction within AR/VR environments.
- Leadership experience with the capacity to steer a multidisciplinary team towards achieving complex project milestones.
