Software Engineering Lead - Market Research

Remote

We’re Changing the Rentals Industry

We’re a profitable, growth-stage company building industry-leading martech and data products for the rentals industry. While originally known for building and operating one of the U.S.’s largest rental marketplaces - Rentable, our focus has shifted to our category-leading AI and data SaaS products with triple-digit growth rates.

We’re a fully remote team of 100+ spread across the U.S. from coast to coast. We operate on a strict no a**holes policy and are proud to have built a community of highly performing people that take our work seriously, but not ourselves.

While we’ve raised $30MM+ to date from some of the world’s best investors, we’re profitable with a strong balance sheet and an indefinite runway. We pride ourselves on achieving rapid growth without having to incinerate capital.

If you like the idea of joining an industry-changing company made up of people who genuinely like each other, Rentable could be a great fit for you.

Your New Team

The ApartmentIQ Market Research team empowers multifamily operators with real-time market intelligence and competitive benchmarking. We aggregate vast datasets - property listings, rent trends, occupancy signals, and construction activity - into a unified analytics platform that helps owners and asset managers make data-driven pricing and investment decisions.

Our stack blends geospatial analytics, data ingestion pipelines, and AI-assisted insights across three functional domains:

  • Data Platform: Ingesting and normalizing feeds from property management systems, public sources, and third-party APIs into Postgres and OpenSearch.
  • Analytics & API Layer: Querying large datasets with geospatial filters and delivering performant APIs to power dashboards and client integrations.
  • Web Application: A React/Tailwind UI backed by a Rails API that visualizes market boundaries, comp sets, and trend analyses on interactive Google Maps.

We value curiosity, pragmatism, and technical excellence - building tools that transform messy real-estate data into actionable intelligence.

The Role

We’re seeking an experienced Software Engineering Lead to guide the technical vision and execution of our Market Research product. You’ll manage a cross-functional team spanning backend and frontend engineers; collaborate closely with Product and Data Science; and ensure the platform scales as our datasets and customers grow.

Expect a balance of hands-on coding (~35%), project delivery (~35%), and mentorship and leadership (~30%). This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of geospatial data, distributed systems, and modern web applications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a cross-functional engineering team across Data Platform, Analytics/API, and Web Application tracks, ensuring flexibility and ownership across domains.
  • Conduct regular 1:1s to coach engineers, remove blockers, and foster professional growth.
  • Collaborate with Product Management on roadmap planning, resourcing, and sprint execution in Linear.
  • Architect and contribute to end-to-end data workflows — from ingesting and normalizing raw feeds into Postgres/OpenSearch to surfacing insights through performant APIs.
  • Guide evolution of our React + Tailwind frontend and Rails 7 API backend, ensuring cohesive design and robust UX for data visualization.
  • Champion best practices in testing, CI/CD, and observability across background jobs, ingestion workers, and AWS ECS deployments.
  • Partner with data science to operationalize new market metrics and ML-driven insights.
  • Drive adoption of developer productivity tools — including AI-assisted code generation and test automation, such as Cursor, Claude Code, and OpenAI Codex.
  • Establish and monitor engineering KPIs: system performance, data freshness, and delivery velocity.
  • Cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and technical rigor.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience building and shipping data-intensive B2B SaaS applications, including 2+ years in an engineering lead or manager role.
  • Deep experience with Ruby on Rails, Sidekiq, and Postgres, including schema design and background-job orchestration.
  • Proficiency with geospatial data (PostGIS, Google Maps API, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience with React, Tailwind, and building performant, data-driven frontends.
  • Skilled in project management and agile delivery — comfortable writing specs, breaking down work, and organizing commitments in Linear.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a collaborative leadership style that bridges technical and product teams.
  • Passion for developer experience, observability, and building tools that make engineers more effective.
  • Bonus: familiarity with multifamily housing data, real estate analytics, or market intelligence platforms.

Why Our Team

  • 100% remote across the U.S., with quarterly in-person gatherings for team offsites
  • Competitive Compensation
  • Flexible Vacation and Parental Leave Policies
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 100% paid Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and Life Insurance Program
  • 401k Program
  • A supportive, learning-first culture where you’ll help shape the next generation of tools for the apartment rental industry

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
