Fusion R&D Technician

Cambridge, MA

About Acceleron Fusion

Acceleron Fusion is on a mission to revolutionize clean, abundant energy through muon-catalyzed fusion—a groundbreaking approach that leverages intense muon beams to trigger nuclear fusion at room temperature. Spun out of research funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, we recently closed a $24 million Series A and operate an integrated fusion testbed on the high‑intensity proton accelerator at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Our partners include PSI, Oak Ridge, Argonne, Fermilab, and top universities.

About this role

Acceleron Fusion is seeking an R&D technician to help build and test our muon-catalyzed fusion research apparatus. The majority of our engineering and fabrication work occurs at our facility in Cambridge, MA. You would also travel with the team for several weeks out of the year to help assemble and field our experiments and particle accelerator facilities in Switzerland, Vancouver, and New York.

What you'll do

  • Assemble and leak-test vacuum hardware and process piping.
  • Build cable assemblies, printed circuit boards, and electronic assemblies.
  • Assemble intricate mechanical and electrical subsystems.
  • Travel to partner labs to install, align, and troubleshoot mechanical systems during experimental operations.
  • Run tests and collect data.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace and stockroom of mechanical and electrical components.

What we're looking for

  • At least 2 years experience working in a research and development environment.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and piping diagrams.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft, Google, Slack, etc.).
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to build and troubleshoot complex systems.
  • Demonstrated time management and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications (not required)

  • Proficiency with soldering and electronics assembly.
  • Proficiency with MIG/TIG or laser welding.
  • Proficiency using machine tools, CAD/CAM, or digital fabrication equipment.
  • Hands-on familiarity with vacuum, cryogenic, or pneumatic systems.
  • Experience doing mechanical or electrical work under a microscope.

Details & Logistics

  • This is an onsite position working 40 hours/week from our facility in Cambridge, MA.
  • Travel (including international) for several weeks per year is required.
  • Our benefits package includes health & dental insurance, retirement savings with company contribution, stock options, paid time off, and 11 company holidays.
  • The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $110,000. This range represents the minimum and maximum base compensation Acceleron Fusion reasonably expects to pay for this position. The specific salary offered will be determined based on relevant factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location. This position may also be eligible for additional compensation such as bonuses, equity, or other benefits.
  • We encourage candidates who don’t meet all of our requirements to apply.
  • Applications that include pictures of machines, equipment, or lab experiments you helped build will be given preference.

Acceleron Fusion is an equal opportunity employer, committed to building a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of background.
