Principal SRE Senior Manager
You Are:
As the Principal SRE Senior Manager, you are the program-level reliability leader for a portfolio of high-traffic, public-facing digital services. You own the SRE operating model across three pods (web/core platform, batch/data and AI services, and partner-facing services), lead the SRE Community of Practice, and are accountable to client and program leadership for reliability outcomes. Infrastructure and platform engineering are provided by the cloud platform team; you are the senior counterpart to its leadership and hold it accountable for platform service levels.
Day-to-Day Activities:
- Own the SRE operating model: embedded product SREs, dedicated pod SREs, and a shared 24x7 incident-command rotation; keep on-call load sustainable and coverage free of single points of failure
- Lead the SRE Community of Practice: set common standards for SLOs and error budgets, observability, production readiness, runbooks, and post-incident reviews; drive adoption across all pods and product teams
- Provide technical leadership to the pods and guide pod leads; coach SREs and support hiring, level calibration, and career development.
- Own SLA/SLO governance and reporting to client leadership: availability, incident SLA attainment, vulnerability and patch SLAs, deployment success, DORA metrics, and error-budget status
- Serve as major-incident commander for critical and cross-pod incidents; lead bridges across the cloud platform team, security operations, and third-party vendors
- Run program-level problem management to find recurring failure patterns and drive structural fixes
- Act as reliability reviewer on architecture and security review boards; set expectations for fault isolation, graceful degradation, and dependency management
- Own capacity planning for peak events with the cloud platform team; set recovery-testing and DR standards and oversee DR rehearsals.
- Negotiate internal service levels, escalation paths, and responsibility boundaries with the cloud platform team, and resolve gaps across that boundary
- Champion automation of operational work across the program: runbooks, alerting, remediation, and ITSM workflows
- Owns reliability outcomes across critical services and influences architecture and engineering practices to improve long-term uptime and scale.
Here's What You Need:
- 12+ years in SRE, infrastructure, production engineering, or IT operations, including 5+ years leading SRE or operations teams or programs across multiple products
- Proven experience defining and enforcing reliability standards, including service objectives, indicators, error budgets, and production readiness criteria
- Demonstrated ability to lead major incident response, root cause analysis, and systemic remediation in high-availability systems
- Deep expertise in resilience engineering, fault isolation, capacity planning, and recovery testing
- Experience reducing incident impact and recurrence through structural improvements, automation, and safer operational practices
- Track record of standing up or transforming an SRE operating model (on-call program, SLO governance, Community of Practice) in a multi-team, multi-vendor environment
- Strong grounding in AWS, containers, CI/CD, enterprise observability, and automation
- Executive-level communication, including SLA reporting to clients and leading cross-vendor major incidents
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
- Major-incident command for critical and cross-pod incidents, including off-hours as needed - regular engagement with client and partner leadership.
