The AccuWeather Technology organization is seeking a highly motivated and technically accomplished leader to drive our middleware strategy and execution as Senior Director, Technology. This role is ideal for someone passionate about building world-class service platforms, system integrations, and high-performing middleware systems that support mission-critical functions like billing, login, product catalogs, push notifications, and more.
Position Summary:
AccuWeather is seeking a passionate and organized Community & Operations Manager of the AccuWeather Lightning Network (AWLN) to lead the engagement, support, and growth of our global community of lightning sensor hosts. This role is central to the continued expansion and optimization of the AWLN - one of the only global lightning detection networks delivering high-quality lightning data and insights to save lives, better protect property, and enable people to make the best weather-impacted decisions.
The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator with a background in meteorology or atmospheric sciences, capable of building relationships with sensor hosts, coordinating logistics, and supporting internal teams with lightning related expertise and materials.
This position is required to be located onsite at AccuWeather’s Headquarters located in State College, PA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for AccuWeather’s global network of lightning sensor hosts.
- Develop and execute community engagement strategies (e.g., quarterly newsletters, exclusive swag, recognition programs, etc.).
- Field inquiries, provide documentation, and support sensor hosts with technical and operational questions.
- Identify and fill known gaps in the AWLN, with focus on expanding global coverage and building redundancy in key and strategic areas.
- Re-engage offline sensor hosts to bring them back online or coordinate sensor retrieval.
- Lead outreach and onboarding of new hosts, including agreement execution and sensor deployment.
- Lead the development of Proof of Performance documents to assist with sales and media usages at AccuWeather.
- Assist with the development, improvement, and updating of AWLN documentation, working closely with technology and leadership teams.
- Support AccuWeather sales teams with lightning related knowledge, expertise, and materials/documentation.
- Become proficient in lightning detection technology, capabilities of the AWLN, lightning data, and lightning safety.
- Manage packaging and shipping of lightning sensors from the State College, PA office to new and existing sensor hosts.
- Track sensor inventory and advise when new parts or equipment need to be ordered.
- Keep in touch with the latest developments in the field of lightning detection and technology.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences, or equivalent education and experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information in general terms.
- Experience in community management or customer engagement is a plus.
- Past experience in weather forecasting or the application of lightning data is a plus.
- Familiarity with lightning detection technology and lightning applications is preferred.
- Highly organized and detail oriented with the ability to manage logistics and multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple teams.
- Willingness to learn and represent AccuWeather’s lightning capabilities in both technical and public/customer facing contexts
