Hardware Intern

AccuWeather is seeking a Hardware Intern to support the Hardware Manager in building, programming, and deploying sensors for the AccuLightning Network™ (ALN) – one of the world's only global lightning detection networks. The Hardware Intern will also help support the expansion of AccuWeather’s growing portfolio of subscription-based weather and alerting hardware products.

This hands-on, technical role is suited to someone who likes working with electronics and wants exposure to a live commercial hardware operation, from assembly through customer deployment.

The ideal candidate is a curious, hands-on problem-solver studying engineering or a related technical field, comfortable working with hardware and eager to learn how operating a commercial lightning sensor network works from end to end. Meteorology background isn't required, but is a plus for someone drawn to the Weather Enterprise. Above all, we're looking for someone with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and genuine interest in growing their technical skills in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Assist with programming, configuring, and assembling ALN lightning sensor kits

· Test sensors for functionality and accuracy prior to packaging

· Solder shields onto lightning sensor boards

· Support packaging and shipping of sensors from the State College office to new and existing hosts

· Help improve internal systems for inventory management and deployment tracking

· May be asked to assist with outreach and onboarding of new sensor hosts during deployment

· Support the Hardware Manager on day-to-day hardware operations

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

· Pursing a degree in engineering, or equivalent technical knowledge and work experience; no meteorology background required (a plus if you have it)

· Comfort with electronics and hands-on device configuration

· Ability to diagnose and resolve basic technical issues

· Familiarity with soldering

· Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office / Google Workspace

· Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and an eagerness to learn

· Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced and collaborative environment
