Director, Data Analysis & Reporting
About Achievement First
Achievement First (AF) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization supporting 39 public charter schools across New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. For more than 25 years, AF has been recognized as one of the top tuition-free public charter school networks in the country. We are committed to creating schools of academic excellence within nurturing environments — schools that prepare students to be college-ready and to pursue and succeed in whatever paths they choose in life.
The majority of AF students are Black and Latinx children from low-income families, many of whom will be the first in their families to graduate from college. Across our network, we employ more than 2,200 staff members — 64% of whom identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color — who collectively educate nearly 15,000 students in Brooklyn and Queens, NY; New Haven, Bridgeport, and Hartford, CT; and Providence and Cranston, RI.
Our mission is to prepare every student to excel in college, career, and life; deepen their understanding of self and community; and lead lives of purpose. We believe in the limitless potential within our students and their power to shape a more just society. That belief drives our deep commitment to student achievement: we aim to set a high bar for learning and create warm, demanding classrooms where rigorous instruction is paired with the care, encouragement, and consistency every student deserves.
We are looking for a strategic and dynamic Director, Analysis and Reporting to join our Systems & Data team.
Your Impact
The Director, Analysis and Reporting leads a team that powers data-informed decision-making across the Achievement First network. As a senior member of the Systems & Data team, you will shape how the organization accesses, analyzes, and acts on data related to student academics, culture, and experience. You will partner closely with program and school leadership to set data strategy, design rigorous analyses, and ensure every stakeholder has the insights they need to drive meaningful outcomes for students.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will be responsible for:
Team Leadership & Planning
- Drive decisions about the team's work agenda by engaging stakeholders across the organization to identify high-priority needs — both direct and indirect.
- Develop project plans and timelines in close collaboration with program teams and other Systems & Data sub-teams, and ensure work is delivered on schedule.
- Distribute work effectively across team members, monitor progress, and provide accountability for quality and timeliness.
Coaching & Developing Team Members
- Build the technical and non-technical capabilities of your team (e.g., programming, data visualization, project management, stakeholder communication) through direct coaching, feedback, and professional development.
- Manage toward individual growth goals through weekly check-ins, work-in-progress reviews, and structured feedback on deliverables.
- Support team members in high-stakes meetings and stakeholder interactions; set and enforce quality standards across all team outputs.
Data Strategy & Organizational Partnership
- Partner with senior leaders to develop a strategic data and analytics approach aligned with organizational goals across a wide range of topic areas — from student academics to culture and teacher effectiveness.
- Collaborate with leadership to assess needs, set key performance metrics and goal-setting frameworks, and inform policy related to data collection and use.
- Develop deep expertise in the work of internal stakeholders to ensure data products are contextually grounded, aligned with AF's organizational stance, and informed by research and sector knowledge.
- Produce high-stakes communications including executive summaries, email updates, and presentation materials for senior audiences.
Data Analysis & Modeling
- Ensure all data reporting continually meets the needs of stakeholders and enables data-driven decisions at every level of the organization.
- Lead the development of new analyses, reports, modeling frameworks, and reporting templates that address evolving organizational priorities.
- Design and refine data systems in partnership with the engineering team to generate and automate complex, recurring analyses.
- Personally execute data requests that are too complex or time-sensitive to delegate, maintaining high standards for rigor and accuracy.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., statistics, data science, public policy, education research) may substitute for up to two years of work experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in data analysis, analytics, or a related field.
- Experience in the K–12 education sector or a mission-driven organization is a strong plus.
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and experience querying relational databases required.
- Advanced proficiency in Tableau or a comparable data visualization platform required.
- Advanced proficiency in at least one statistical or programming language (SAS, R, or Python) required.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required.
- Familiarity with student assessment data (e.g., NWEA MAP, STAR, state assessments, College Board), academic growth models, Item Response Theory (IRT), and survey methodologies a significant plus.
Leadership & Communication Skills
- Proven ability to manage and develop a team, set a vision, and deliver results through others.
- Strong project planning and management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple workstreams and competing stakeholder demands.
- Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences — in writing, in presentations, and in conversation.
- Collaborative, relationship-oriented approach; skilled at building trust and partnership across teams and levels of the organization.
- Analytical mindset grounded in a genuine passion for using data to improve outcomes for students.
