Vice President, Membership & Components

The Vice President of Membership and Components serves as a strategic leader responsible for developing and executing comprehensive membership growth, retention, and engagement strategies while overseeing the organization’s component relations and volunteer engagement programs. This role leads a team of directors and managers to deliver exceptional member value, foster meaningful connections across ACOG’s Districts and Sections, and drive sustainable revenue growth through innovative membership initiatives. The VP ensures seamless integration between membership services and component activities to create a unified, compelling member experience throughout the entire membership lifecycle.

Note: This position is considered Hybrid and will need to commute to ACOG's office located in Washington, D.C.

 Duties/Responsibilities:

 Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive 3-5 year strategic plans for membership growth, retention, and component engagement aligned with ACOG’s organizational mission and strategic priorities.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to enhance member value proposition and optimize the member journey from recruitment through long-term engagement.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure success across membership and component activities.
  • Drive innovation in membership models, benefit structures, and engagement strategies to meet evolving member needs and industry trends.

  Financial Management and Data-Driven Decision Making:

  • Manage department budget ensuring efficient resource allocation and ROI optimization.
  • Drive non-dues revenue initiatives through innovative membership programs, partnerships, and value-added services.
  • Leverage advanced analytics, CRM systems, and emerging technologies to drive data-informed decision making.
  • Utilize data insights to continuously improve ACOG processes and member services.

 Membership Strategy and Growth:

  • Oversee development and execution of data-driven membership recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies.
  • Lead market research and competitive analysis to identify new membership opportunities and service enhancements.
  • Ensure optimal membership pricing strategies and benefit packages that balance member value with organizational sustainability.

  Component Relations:

  • Provide strategic oversight for District and Section operations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and consistent member experience.
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve volunteer leadership programs including structured onboarding, mentorship pathways, succession planning, and professional development initiatives for District Chairs, Section leaders, and emerging volunteer leaders.
  • Oversee planning, execution, and evaluation of major component events including District Advisory Council Meetings, Annual District Meetings, Section Meetings and other strategic programming that enhances volunteer engagement and member value.
  • Develop and oversee streamlined processes for District and Section workplan development, ensuring alignment with ACOG’s strategic priorities while supporting component-driven initiatives that serve local member needs.
  • Establish and monitor performance metrics for Districts and Sections, providing data-driven insights and recommendations for improvement while recognizing and celebrating component achievements and innovations.
  • Serve as primary staff liaison to the Council of District Chairs, facilitating effective communication between District leadership and ACOG executive team.
  • Foster strong relationships with volunteer leaders and component stakeholders to enhance organizational governance and members engagement.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of direct and indirect reports
  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovations, and member-centricity within the department.
  • Ensure effective succession planning and talent development across the membership and components team.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proven experience managing complex component relationships, volunteer leadership development, and multi-tiered organizational governance structures within membership associations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing membership campaign lifecycle and building impactful membership engagement programs at all levels of membership.
  • Strong leadership and strategic planning skills, with a focus on innovation and inclusivity.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, CRM systems, and digital engagement tools.
  • Experience in marketing, communications, and event planning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Collaborative, innovative, and results-oriented leader with excellent communication skills.
  • Deep experience in strategic planning and execution, process improvement, program budgeting and fiscal management.
  • Project planning and project management with proven ability to drive multiple and simultaneous projects to successful completion.
  • Experience leading communications and marketing teams.
  • Experience with contracting, negotiations, and change management procedures.
  • Experience working with data and analytics and utilizing that information to reach tangible recommendations.
  • Ability to critically review ideas and business plans from team members and fine tune them for presentation.
  • Demonstrated track record of hiring, managing and mentoring staff members. This involves holding people accountable, resolving conflicts, active participation in annual performance evaluations and providing professional development opportunities.
  • An excellent communicator—oral, written, and listening skills—and a bridge builder who can develop relationships and build trust and credibility with a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Collaborative, innovative, and strategic leader, with a roll-up-your-sleeves approach.
  • Ability to travel up to 30%.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related fields required. MBA preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of operations to include a minimum of 10 years in senior leadership roles.
  • 10 years of supervisory experience.
  • 5 years of experience working for a non-profit, a membership association or in healthcare preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Salary Range

$195,000 - $210,000 USD
