Tech Lead / Manager, Full Stack, Bay Area Hybrid

The Role
We're seeking an exceptional Tech Lead / Manager to join our engineering team and help scale DataHub's impact across thousands of enterprises worldwide. This role combines deep technical leadership with people management to drive product excellence, engineering culture, and team growth in our mission to make data reliable and discoverable.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Architecture & Design: Lead technical architecture decisions for DataHub's user facing products, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability for enterprise deployments
- Hands-on Development: Contribute directly to critical features across the full stack - Java/Spring Boot backend services, React/TypeScript frontend, and Python ingestion framework where appropriate
- Code Quality: Establish and maintain high standards for code quality, testing, and documentation across multiple programming languages and frameworks
- Performance Optimization: Establish performance metrics and optimization strategies for complex data visualizations and interactions
Engineering Management
- Team Building & Culture: Hire, onboard, and mentor world-class engineers while fostering a collaborative, inclusive engineering culture that balances innovation with operational excellence
- Performance & Career Development: Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and create individual development plans aligned with company goals to help engineers grow from mid-level to senior and staff levels
- Process & Delivery: Implement engineering processes, workflows, and best practices while ensuring teams deliver high-quality features on time
- Release & Quality Management: Oversee regular releases, comprehensive testing strategies, and incident response for both open-source DataHub and enterprise offerings
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Product Partnership: Work closely with Product Management to translate business requirements into technical solutions and realistic delivery timelines
- Go To Market Support: Collaborate with Customer Success and Sales Engineering teams to understand enterprise customer needs, address technical questions during pre and post sales cycles, and provide expertise for complex deployments
- Community Engagement: Contribute to the open-source DataHub community through technical discussions, code reviews, and architectural decisions
Required Qualifications
Technical Expertise (7+ years)
- Frontend Development: Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and modern web development practices. Proven track record of building and scaling consumer-facing web applications that handle significant user traffic
- API Design: Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and GraphQL services for complex data applications
- Backend Development: Expert-level proficiency in Java and Spring Boot ecosystem, with experience building scalable microservices architectures
- Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure), containerization (Docker), and familiarity with orchestration (Kubernetes)
Management Experience (3+ years)
- Team Leadership: Proven track record of managing and growing engineering teams of 5-15 engineers
- Hiring: Experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring top engineering talent across multiple disciplines
- Mentorship: Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and help them advance their careers
- Process Management: Experience implementing engineering processes, agile methodologies, and development workflows
Data Domain Knowledge
- Data Infrastructure: Familiarity with modern data stack tools and technologies (data warehouses, ETL/ELT tools, BI platforms)
- Enterprise Software: Experience building and scaling enterprise software products with complex deployment requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Metadata Management: Understanding of data cataloging, metadata systems, data lineage, and data governance principles
- Open Source Experience: Contributions to major open-source projects or experience building open-source communities
- Startup Experience: Previous experience at high-growth startups, particularly in the data or developer tools space
- Enterprise Sales Support: Experience working with enterprise customers and supporting complex technical sales cycles
- Data Engineering Background: Hands-on experience as a data engineer or platform engineer in data-intensive environments
- Academic Background: Computer Science degree or equivalent technical education

Location and Compensation
Bay Area (hybrid, 3 days in Palo Alto office)
Salary Range: $225,000 to $300,000
