Job description
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Laboratory and Facilities Operations to lead the strategy, infrastructure, and day-to-day management of our laboratory and office environments. This individual will be responsible for creating and sustaining a high-performing, safe, and compliant workplace that enables cutting-edge scientific work. The role combines hands-on operational leadership with strategic planning and cross-functional collaboration across R&D, EHS, Procurement, and Facilities.
This role reports to the Head of Operations and will be based onsite.
Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Infrastructure
- Lead planning, buildout, and optimization of laboratory and facility operations, including lab expansions, infrastructure upgrades, and capital equipment planning.
- Establish scalable lab operations frameworks across departments, aligning long-term strategy with daily execution.
- Develop and manage annual operational budgets for lab and facility services, including forecasting for capital expenditures, maintenance, and lab services.
Safety & Compliance
- Serve as the company’s Biosafety officer and primary point of contact for all safety programs across office, lab, and vivarium spaces.
- Own environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs and documentation in partnership with internal stakeholders and external consultants.
- Oversee safety training, onboarding, and compliance audits; lead lab safety committee and coordinate inspections by regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, county, state).
- Maintain all permits and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Develop and continuously improve incident response protocols, risk assessments, and emergency coverage plans (including after-hours alarms).
Operational Excellence
- Lead all facets of daily lab operations, including equipment maintenance (preventive and reactive), calibration, inventory management, procurement, waste management, and lab sustainability initiatives.
- Lead continuous improvement and standardization of operational practices across multiple lab environments.
- Develop and maintain inventory systems for consumables, reagents, lab gases, and shared equipment.
- Oversee lab-wide vendor and service provider relationships; negotiate contracts, manage service levels, and ensure cost-effectiveness.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead organizational communication between lab users, scientific leadership, operations, and corporate functions (e.g., People and Culture, Finance, IT, Legal), for lab and facilities matters.
- Partner with teams across Research to resolve infrastructure and logistical bottlenecks.
- Collaborate with People and Culture and onboarding teams to ensure a seamless experience for new hires accessing lab systems and safety training.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific, engineering, or facilities-related discipline required; advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in laboratory/facilities operations in biotech or pharmaceutical environments, with 3+ years in a people or functional leadership role.
- Deep working knowledge of lab safety regulations and compliance requirements; experience acting as a biosafety officer and leading safety committees.
- Proven track record overseeing lab buildouts, equipment procurement, lab inspections, and vendor management.
- Experience working with multiple environments (TC, BSL 2, vivarium) is highly preferred.
- Strong communication, leadership, and change management skills.
- This position requires occasional availability outside of normal working hours for emergency response support.
Compensation
The expected annual salary range for this full-time position is $181,000-$226,200, plus eligibility for bonus, benefits, and equity incentives. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, business needs, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
