The Identity & Verification group owns the foundational platforms and core services required to establish and maintain a trusted identity for all customers throughout their lifecycle with Adyen. Our mission is to provide a robust and scalable identity foundation, from onboarding and throughout the entire customer journey. This is achieved by building and evolving core platforms that identify the person or business behind every interaction, while proactively detecting and preventing identity fraud.

 

The Team: Identity Verification & Decisioning (ID&VD)

The ID&VD team is a newly established, high-impact initiative, with a mandate to define and build the next generation of identity decisioning at Adyen.

The team owns the decisioning layer that combines identity signals, risk models, and regulatory requirements into decisioning across the customer lifecycle. It focuses on designing scalable KYC/KYB frameworks, improving fraud detection, and reducing onboarding friction through smarter, data-driven decisioning.

Engineers in this team play a key role in shaping both the technical direction and the problem space, working on systems that directly impact fraud prevention effectiveness, customer experience, and operational efficiency.

  • We design and operate mission-critical infrastructure to identify and manage identity, risk, and compliance workflows at scale.
  • We leverage a holistic, data-driven understanding of merchants and their activities to power a sophisticated, risk-based decisioning approach.
  • We continuously push the boundaries of AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics to detect anomalies and predict emerging risks.
  • We collaborate closely with Regulatory, Compliance, Operations, and Product teams to balance strict compliance, seamless customer experience, and efficient resource investment.

What You Will Do

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Identity Verification & Decisioning team, you will take end-to-end ownership of complex systems and strategic initiatives, playing a key role in shaping a core part of Adyen's integrity platform.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the design and development of highly scalable, resilient distributed systems that are central to Adyen’s platform.
  • Drive architectural decisions and contribute to long-term technical strategy, ensuring systems are extensible, maintainable, and aligned with business goals.
  • Develop and evolve the technology, processes, and potential machine learning models for Payments and Know Your Customer (KYC) data collection, and automated verification across the entire customer lifecycle.
  • Own and evolve platform frameworks that manage onboarding of legal entities and integration of identity and verification capabilities.
  • Influence and improve the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and design reviews to testing, deployment, and operational excellence.
  • Take true end-to-end ownership, including production performance, reliability, and continuous improvement of your systems.
  • Define and uphold high standards for system health, including designing SLOs, improving observability, and implementing robust monitoring and alerting strategies.
  • Proactively identify scalability, reliability, and performance bottlenecks, and drive initiatives to address them.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Managers, Customer Onboarding, Merchant Operations, and Regulatory teams, acting as a technical partner in shaping solutions.
  • Mentor and guide other engineers, fostering engineering excellence and contributing to a strong technical culture within the team.
  • Drive the development of observability and operational tooling to enhance system reliability, efficiency, and transparency.

Who You Are

We are looking for a senior engineer with strong ownership and technical leadership, passionate about building robust, large-scale systems in a critical financial domain.

  • You have deep expertise in Java, with extensive experience building and evolving web services and REST APIs in production environments.
  • You have proven experience designing, building, and operating highly scalable and reliable distributed systems.
  • You are highly proficient with SQL/PostgreSQL, and understand data modeling and performance optimization in complex systems.
  • You champion operational excellence, with strong experience in monitoring, observability, SLOs, and resilience patterns.
  • You demonstrate ownership beyond implementation, taking responsibility for system outcomes in production.
  • You are a proactive problem-solver, capable of navigating ambiguity and driving solutions independently.
  • You have a strong track record of leading technical discussions, influencing decisions, and aligning stakeholders.
  • You have a deep interest in advanced software design patterns, with a focus on scalability, resilience, and maintainability.
  • You have experience with event-driven architectures and streaming systems.
  • Experience with Cassandra, Kafka, and Big Data platforms is a plus.
