Position Summary:
The Associate, Data Engineer is responsible for maintaining the reliability and performance of AffirmedRx’s Snowflake data warehouse and upstream data ingestion pipelines. This hands-on role supports daily operations by monitoring file ingestion, data movement, transformation processes, scheduled loads, and troubleshooting data-related issues. The position also assists in expanding and enhancing the data warehouse through new tables, dbt models, automation, monitoring, and other development initiatives under the guidance of the Data Warehouse Manager. As a designated backup to the Senior Data Warehouse Engineer, the role helps ensure continuity of critical warehouse operations and reduces key-person dependency. Over time, the engineer will build technical expertise and assume greater ownership of data warehouse processes and solutions.
What you will do:
Warehouse and Pipeline Operations:
- Monitor daily Snowflake loads, file ingestion, and scheduled jobs; confirm expected files arrive, land correctly, and process without error
- Operate and maintain drop-zone / upload-zone, data-lake, and SFTP file movement (e.g., Couchdrop, Azure Data Factory, service-account–based moves); triage failures and rejected files
- Respond to file, load, and data-quality issues in a timely, well-documented way; escalate and coordinate with data engineering, pre-processing, and IT as needed
- Maintain and act on file-level monitoring and alerting — “expected vs. received” tracking, format/validation alerts, and hold-folder sweeps
Backup and Continuity:
- Serve as trained backup for core data-warehouse operations so critical pipelines and client deliverables continue during absences and peak periods
- Learn and document existing pipelines, jobs, schedules, and troubleshooting steps so recurring work is reproducible and not tied to a single person or personal account
- Support recurring client and regulatory file deliverables (e.g., monthly stop-loss, claims, and accumulator files) on a shared, documented schedule
Warehouse Build and Enhancement:
- Build and maintain tables, views, and dbt models under direction; support data-model, data-vault, and schema work for reporting and analytics
- Develop and maintain crawlers, file validators, and file-rejection rules; help automate manual file downloads and uploads into the warehouse
- Assist with Snowflake administration tasks — role and grant management, MFA/security SOP adherence, storage-account configuration, clone and backup routines — following established security standards
Validation, Documentation, and Collaboration:
- QA loaded data and reconcile discrepancies across source systems before release; support data-accuracy checks and audits
- Maintain clear documentation: pipelines, data sources, schedules, SOPs, and runbooks (including dev-to-production process)
- Partner with data engineering, pre-processing, analytics, and IT/security to gather requirements and hand work into production
What you need:
- Degree in a quantitative or technical field (Computer Science, Information Systems, Data, Engineering) or equivalent experience; this is an early-career role
- 1–3 years of experience working with SQL and cloud data warehouse platforms, preferably Snowflake
- Working SQL skills and familiarity with a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake preferred; comparable platforms considered)
- Comfort with data files and pipelines — CSV/flat files, SFTP, encryption/PGP concepts, and troubleshooting file/load errors
- Detail orientation, reliability, and a documentation habit; able to follow runbooks and escalate appropriately
- Willingness to participate in a shared support/backup rotation for time-sensitive loads and deliverables
- Exposure to dbt, Python for data work, Azure (Data Factory, storage/data lake), or Couchdrop-style file automation
- Familiarity with data modeling, data vault, or warehouse monitoring and alerting
- Healthcare, pharmacy benefit management (PBM), or claims/eligibility data exposure, and awareness of PHI/HIPAA handling
- Familiarity with pharmacy data concepts (NDC, eligibility, accumulators, formulary) is a plus
- Fully remote; reliable internet and a suitable home work environment
- Occasional off-hours support may be required for time-sensitive loads, client files, or incident response
- Willingness and ability to travel (10%-20%)
What you get:
- To impact industry change in the pharmacy benefits management space, while delivering the highest quality patient outcomes
- To work in a culture where people thrive because when OUR team thrives, OUR business thrives
- Competitive compensation, including health, dental, vision and other benefits
Note:
AffirmedRx is committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment. Remote employees are expected to maintain a professional work environment free of distractions to ensure optimal performance and collaboration.
