Mechanical Engineering Co-Op (Spring 2027)

Cambridge, MA

About Acceleron Fusion:

Acceleron Fusion is a venture-backed clean energy startup developing breakthrough fusion technology. Founded to commercialize Department of Energy-funded research, we recently completed our Series A funding round. We're working with leading research institutions like the Paul Scherrer Institute and Brookhaven National Laboratory at the forefront of fusion energy innovation. Based in Cambridge, MA, our 20-person team offers hands-on experience in groundbreaking fusion research and development.

About the role:

This is a hands-on position, working with vacuum systems, cryogenic equipment, high-pressure gas handling systems, and precision mechanical components. You'll work alongside our multidisciplinary team to design, build, and test critical components of our fusion system.

In addition to working alongside our team at our lab in Cambridge, you'll spend several weeks traveling to our partner facilities in the United States and abroad. You'll gain hands-on experience operating our muon-catalyzed fusion apparatus on one of the world's most powerful proton accelerators, conducting real experiments that directly advance fusion technology.

What you’ll do:

  • Take ownership of a mechanical design project, from early ideation to assembly and testing
  • Design and assembly of vacuum and cryogenic systems
  • CAD modeling of mechanical components and assemblies using Solidworks
  • Thermal and structural analysis of system components
  • Construction and testing of gas handling systems
  • Collaboration with physicists, electrical engineers, and other team members
  • Documentation of mechanical designs and test results
  • Hands-on fabrication and modification of mechanical components

What we’re looking for:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience with CAD software (preferably SOLIDWORKS)
  • Understanding of thermal and mechanical systems
  • Basic machining and fabrication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to read and create technical drawings
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively as part of a team

Co-Op Details:

  • Location: Onsite/in person, working from our lab in Cambridge, MA
