Junior Engineer
Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company that serves shoulder-to-shoulder with federal agencies to find innovative, human-centered solutions. We build better by putting people first. We are animated by our core values of Purpose, Wholeness, Trust, Self-Management and Inclusion. We deliver our solutions in autonomous teams of self-managed professionals (no managers here!) who genuinely care about each other and the work. We know that’s our company’s purpose – and that we can only achieve it by supporting a culture where people feel valued, self-managed, and love to come to work.
The Role
We are seeking a junior engineer (Engineering I) to serve as an Integration & Platform Engineer on a cross‑functional team responsible for secure, reliable submission of Veteran forms and artifacts through multiple VA systems. You will own PDF generation, packaging, submission, error handling, and observability across the entire flow—from Benefits Intake API → EMMS API → Caseflow Management Platform (CMP) → Veterans Benefits Management System (VBMS)—ensuring each hand‑off is compliant, monitored, and performant.
Scope of Work
- Generate PDFs using the VA PDFFill library within vets‑api, ensuring fidelity to source data.
- Package PDF, JSON, and metadata into CMP‑compliant envelopes for downstream routing.
- Integrate with DocuSign Government and other third‑party PDF signing/routing tools.
- Submit packets to the Benefits Intake API and validate successful routing to VBMS/Caseflow.
- Implement polling and idempotent retries/backoff to query status and guarantee delivery.
- Diagnose & troubleshoot data/document routing errors with external partner teams.
- Enforce PII retention policies (ephemeral storage), compute MD5/SHA‑256 checksums for audit, and manage secrets securely.
- Integrate or configure CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins) for vets‑api components; add back‑end monitoring tools as needed.
- Ensure compliance with VA security requirements (FedRAMP, NIST 800‑53).
- Automate integration & performance tests to verify reliability at scale.
- Build dashboards & alerts keyed on GUIDs to surface latency, failure modes, and throughput metrics.
Responsibilities
- This role centers on crafting components and service APIs, using various frameworks and architectures to thoughtfully integrate advanced features. This is a hands-on coding role.
- In this role, you’ll work with others to solve technical challenges, design effective solutions, troubleshoot production issues, and improve system performance. You’ll apply design patterns to support quality decisions and contribute to maintaining standards through code reviews, tools, testing strategies, and metrics.
- You’ll apply your experience to make informed architectural decisions, using design patterns and best practices to maintain quality through code reviews and metrics. Your exposure to diverse systems will help you make effective choices for architecture and scalability, supporting smoother workflows and enhancing the development process.
- We value teamwork and mentorship. In this role, you’ll support colleagues through code reviews and pair programming, helping to strengthen their skills and improve code quality. You’ll also communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams to foster a collaborative environment.
- This position encourages you to champion innovative ideas and support others in engaging with new approaches. By sharing context and connecting team members to the broader goals, you’ll help address challenges holistically and contribute to meaningful, systemic improvements and make informed trade offs.
- We expect this role and the responsibilities associated with it to grow and change over time. We value agility, and count on your ability to adapt and grow your skills as the team and needs of the project evolve.
- Support the practice of engineering within the organization as needed, through activities such as help with recruitment and hiring, code challenges, and participating in our community of practice.
