The Data department oversees all of Agoda’s data-related requirements. Our ultimate goal is to enable and increase the use of data in the company through creative approaches and the implementation of powerful resources such as operational and analytical databases, queue systems, BI tools, and data science technology. We hire the brightest minds from around the world to take on this challenge and equip them with the knowledge and tools that contribute to their personal growth and success while supporting our company’s culture of diversity and experimentation. The role the Data team plays at Agoda is critical as business users, product managers, engineers, and many others rely on us to empower their decision making. The opportunity:

As an Engineering Manager, Backend/Data at Agoda, you will lead a team of talented engineers in building and scaling robust backend and data platforms that power critical products and services at Agoda. You will drive the design and development of distributed systems, data pipelines, and high-throughput, low-latency services, while ensuring reliability, scalability, security, and operational excellence.

This role also offers the opportunity to work on fintech-related platforms and transaction-heavy systems, including areas connected to payments, financial operations, and other business-critical flows where accuracy, resilience, and performance are essential.

In this Role, you’ll get to:

  • Lead a high-performing engineering team while staying hands-on with coding, code reviews, and technical guidance.
  • Coach engineers through technical problem-solving, design discussions, and day-to-day development.
  • Architect scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems in a high-traffic, data-intensive environment.
  • Drive engineering across backend services, infrastructure, performance, data, client-facing systems, and fintech-related platform capabilities.
  • Own production systems, including operational health, scalability, reliability, maintainability, and security.
  • Shape engineering best practices across software design, architecture, testing, system operations, and secure engineering.
  • Develop people through mentoring, feedback, and career growth support.
  • Hire and scale strong engineering talent.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver impactful business, product, and platform outcomes.
  • Use data-driven decision making to improve team effectiveness and delivery.

What you’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Demonstrate strong hands-on coding ability in at least one language such as Java, Scala, or C#.
  • Bring strong experience in systems architecture and scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems.
  • Show experience as a system owner with operational responsibility for production services.
  • Apply knowledge of lower-level engineering concepts such as garbage collection, threading, and context switching.
  • Operate effectively in a DevOps culture with exposure to automation, CI/CD, and Agile / Scrum.
  • Maintain good understanding of application security and secure engineering practices.
  • Lead engineering teams with 5+ direct reports and a strong track record of building and developing talent.
  • Communicate clearly, manage stakeholders effectively, and operate with strong ownership and autonomy.
  • Practice data-driven decision making in delivery and engineering management.
  • Bring the ability to operate effectively in environments involving transaction-heavy, reliability-sensitive, or fintech-related systems.

It’s Great if you have:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in more than one programming language.
  • Bring experience with large-scale distributed systems in high-growth or high-traffic environments.
  • Show exposure to travel tech, e-commerce, marketplace, or fintech platforms.
  • Understand data engineering or machine learning team environments.
  • Bring prior experience hiring and scaling teams rapidly.
  • Have experience working on payments, financial systems,or other transaction-focused platforms.
