Accounting Manager

We are in search of an Accounting Manager to join our Controllers department in Rocklin, California. This full-time position reports to the VP, Assistant Controller and is responsible for serving as a hands-on supervisor whose responsibilities include the preparation of accurate and timely financial data in the areas of accounts payable, expense claim processing, fixed assets and general accounting.

Compensation Information

The base salary range for this position in Rocklin, California is:

Typical starting range: $91,500 - $126,600
Full base salary range: $91,500 - $163,000
Annual performance-based incentive target is 12 or 15% of base depending on experience. 

*Relocation assistance will be provided to eligible candidates who must relocate to accept this position. 

Essential Duties

  • Provide oversight, review and supervision for accounts payable, fixed asset and expense reimbursement functions, including procedure development and adherence.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and regulatory guidance in areas of responsibility, performing research when necessary.
  • Responsible for the oversight and management of internal controls within areas of responsibility.
  • Serve as a representative on project teams and other work groups as assigned; assist in the design, testing, and implementation of new accounting or other systems, software upgrades, and automation projects that affect the department; provide input on existing system functionality, design and internal controls.
  • Assist in coordinating information required by internal/external review parties such as Internal Audit, Farm Credit Administration and external auditors.

  • Demonstrate supervisory competencies and meet expectations of a people leader at AgWest.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop employees, including but not limited to role functions, workflow management, time tracking and attendance, establishing annual goals, providing regular feedback, and performing all required performance actions. 
  • Communicate goals, expectations, and updates clearly and consistently; serve as the primary point of contact between staff and leadership.
  • Ensure new employees are effectively trained, and proper onboarding processes are followed; identify learning gaps and coordinate ongoing learning opportunities for staff.
  • Mentor direct reports, creating development and stretch opportunities as appropriate. 
  • Ensure employees understand and comply with all relevant AgWest procedures, policies, and processes. 
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and organizational policies by identifying and mitigating legal and operational risks related to pay, leave, accommodations, workplace safety, discrimination, harassment, and other protected rights.
  • Recognize and respond to potential issues, create documentation, and collaborate with leadership and HR to promptly and appropriately address issues. 

Travel Requirements

  • AgWest employees may occasionally be asked to travel for all-staff or team meetings not included in the standard travel requirements for the role

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proven ability to lead by example in a manager role
  • Ability to effectively identify, hire, and develop strong talent, and maintain a high performing team
  • Generally, requires at least five years’ related experience including previous oversight of accounting areas (i.e. accounts payable, expense reimbursements, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently given general direction of objectives and expected outcomes and cascade information to assigned downline
  • Ability to ensure assigned areas operate efficiently, are recognized as a strategic resource, and produce high quality work that is timely and accurate
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of accounting, economic and finance principles and practices
  • Proven ability to lead by example with a high level of integrity, effectively engage staff and proactively eliminate/reduce issues before they arise
  • At least five years specific knowledge and oversight experience related to accounts payable, fixed asset and expense reimbursement, and internal controls within these areas

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with general ledger, accounts payable and fixed asset systems
  • Demonstrated employee coaching and development skills with a successful track record of managing staff
  • Knowledge and understanding of accounting principles, financial statement preparation, and internal controls
