The Publishing Director provides strategic leadership for a defined segment of the AIP Publishing journal portfolio, which may include both AIP Publishing–owned journals and journals published in partnership with external societies or publisher partners.
The Publishing Director is responsible for the performance, development, and growth of the journals within their portfolio. The role contributes to portfolio strategy and leads its execution within the assigned portfolio segment, ensuring journals serve their research communities while supporting AIP Publishing’s publishing and revenue goals.
The Publishing Director leads and develops a team of Publishers and Associate Publishers and works closely with Editors, society partners, and cross-functional teams across marketing, operations, technology, and finance to drive portfolio performance and long-term growth.
This role applies an enterprise lens to portfolio performance, balancing editorial priorities, community needs, and financial outcomes to ensure the long-term health and growth of the journal portfolio.
How you'll make an impact:
Portfolio Development
- Lead execution and ongoing development of strategy for a defined portfolio segment.
- Contribute market insight, portfolio performance analysis, and community intelligence to inform overall journal portfolio strategy.
- Oversee development and positioning of journals within the portfolio, identifying opportunities for growth, expansion into emerging research areas, or repositioning of titles.
- Identify opportunities for new journal launches, acquisitions, or portfolio development aligned with market trends and organizational priorities.
- Develop and manage the annual operating plan and consolidated forecasting for the portfolio segment.
Portfolio Performance
- Monitor portfolio performance across key metrics including submissions, publications, revenue, turnaround time, and community engagement, and implement strategies to address risks or opportunities.
- Partner with internal stakeholders across Marketing, Sales, Editorial Operations, Technology, Customer Insights, and Finance to support journal growth and portfolio performance.
Editorial Team Engagement
- Serve as the senior publishing lead for relationships with Editors-in-Chief, editorial boards, and society or publisher partners across the portfolio.
- Provide strategic guidance to editorial leadership to ensure journal positioning, development priorities, and editorial policies align with AIP Publishing’s publishing strategy.
- Advise on editor appointments, renewals, and succession planning across the portfolio.
- Lead or support resolution of complex editorial or partnership matters.
Team Development
- Lead and develop a team of Publishers and Associate Publishers responsible for individual journals.
- Set expectations for journal strategy, performance management, and stakeholder engagement.
- Provide coaching, feedback, and professional development to strengthen publishing capabilities and support career growth.
What you're great at:
- Strong knowledge of scholarly publishing and the STM landscape
- Ability to develop and execute strategy across a multi-journal portfolio
- Demonstrated leadership capability, including managing and developing publishing professionals
- Strong analytical and financial management skills, with the ability to interpret performance data and guide decision-making
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills with editors, societies, and internal stakeholders
- Sound judgment and ability to navigate complex editorial, partnership, and organizational situations
What we're looking for:
- 10+ years of experience in scholarly publishing or a related field with increasing responsibility for journal or portfolio development
- Experience managing publishing staff and leading teams
- Experience working with editors, editorial boards, and/or society partners
- Experience overseeing journal financial performance, forecasting, and strategic planning
- Advanced degree in relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience preferred.

Salary Range:
$120,000 - $150,000
At AIPP, we offer competitive compensation based on the role, experience, and other relevant factors. Under the New York Convenience Rule, all employees, regardless of their residence in other states, will be taxed at the New York State tax rate. Employees may also have additional state-specific tax obligations depending on where they live.
