College Counselor
College Counseling Associate & Academic Tutor
Help students navigate high school, discover the right colleges, and tell their story.
AJ Tutoring is an established Bay Area education company that has supported students and families for more than 20 years. We are looking for a thoughtful, organized, and engaging educator to join our growing College Counseling team.
This is a great opportunity for someone who loves working with teenagers and is interested in building a career in college counseling. You do not need to come to us as an experienced college counselor. We are looking for someone with strong communication and writing skills, excellent judgment, and the ability to build meaningful relationships with students and families.
We provide training, mentorship, and ongoing support as you develop your college counseling expertise.
This is a unique hybrid role combining college counseling and academic tutoring. You will work closely with high school students over time—helping them succeed academically while gradually taking on greater responsibility for guiding students through the college admissions process.
What You'll Do
College Counseling
- Build strong, supportive relationships with high school students and their families
- Help students explore their interests, goals, and potential college options
- Guide students through college research and the development of a thoughtful, balanced college list
- Coach students through brainstorming, drafting, and revising college essays
- Help students organize and complete applications accurately and on time
- Manage deadlines and keep students moving forward throughout a multi-step application process
- Communicate regularly with parents about progress, priorities, and next steps
- Collaborate with experienced AJ college counselors who provide guidance, feedback, and additional perspective on student applications
Academic Tutoring
- Tutor students one-on-one in at least one high school academic subject
- Help students build confidence, independence, and stronger study habits
- Develop long-term relationships with students and families
- Work primarily during after-school, evening, and weekend hours
Who We're Looking For
You may be a teacher, tutor, academic advisor, writing coach, recent graduate, or other education professional interested in developing expertise in college counseling.
Strong candidates will have:
- A bachelor's degree
- Experience working directly with middle school, high school, or college-age students
- Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
- Teaching competency in at least one high school academic subject
- Exceptional organization and attention to detail
- The ability to manage multiple students, projects, and deadlines simultaneously
- Warmth and confidence communicating with both teenagers and parents
- Intellectual curiosity and an interest in learning the college admissions landscape
- A collaborative mindset and openness to feedback and professional development
- Availability during after-school, evening, and some weekend hours
Prior college admissions experience is welcome but not required.
Why AJ Tutoring?
College counseling can be difficult to learn on your own. At AJ, you will be part of an experienced team rather than operating as an individual practitioner.
Our counselors collaborate regularly to review college lists, essays, application strategy, and completed applications. You'll receive training, mentorship, and ongoing feedback while developing the judgment and expertise needed to become an excellent college counselor.
Because AJ also provides academic tutoring, our counselors have the opportunity to understand students beyond their applications—their learning styles, academic strengths, challenges, interests, and goals.
Most importantly, you'll have the opportunity to work closely with students during one of the most important transitions of their lives, helping them stay organized, discover what they want, and find colleges where they can thrive.
Compensation: $70,000–$90,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
