Location:
Ideally, this role will be based at Akaysha's Head Office in Melbourne, Cremorne. We'd also consider our Brisbane office as an alternate location.

The role:

The Senior Power System Engineer will be responsible for leading the power system modelling of large-scale energy storage, renewable energy, and hydrogen projects, primarily using PSS/E and PSCAD. This role will focus on supporting the integration of multi-megawatt systems into the National Electricity Market (NEM), collaborating closely with international OEMs, consultants, and regulatory bodies like AEMO/NSPs. The engineer will play a key role in optimizing power system models, conducting performance studies (including R0, R1, and R2 test plans), and ensuring compliance with Generator Performance Standards (GPS). In addition, the role involves providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, evaluating and selecting critical components such as power conversion and battery systems, and staying at the forefront of emerging technologies like virtual synchronous machines and advanced inverter control systems. The successful candidate will contribute to high-impact, strategic projects that shape the future of energy while working across diverse engineering teams and international markets, particularly in Asia, Europe and America

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Power System Modelling of multi-megawatt-scale energy storage systems, renewables projects and hydrogen projects in to support Connection Application processes. Modelling primarily in PSS/E / PSCAD.
  • Support a major international OEM with entry to the NEM including power system model improvement and optimisation, GPS studies, RO, R1 and R2 test plan development
  • Liaising with OEMs, external engineering consultants and AEMO/NSPs including troubleshooting of power system models and control system performance
  • Support the Engineering team with Connection Application processes including R1 design/modelling packages, Generator Performance Standards (GPS), start up and shut down procedures, R2 validation and testing, and all registration submissions for approval by AEMO/NSP
  • Work with Akaysha’s engineering design team to optimise based on power system modelling performance
  • Manage and support the Head of Engineering with component selection and due diligence including the evaluation of power conversion systems, control systems, balance of plant system design and battery systems from multiple vendors.
  • Support the investigation of advanced control systems for modern inverter applications including virtual synchronous machines, providing fast frequency response, virtual inertia, and virtual transmission services
  • Investigate power system modelling requirements in new emerging international markets particularly throughout Asia, Europe and America

What you'll bring:

  • BS or MS in Electrical, Control or Power Systems Engineering
  • 3+ years’ experience in power system modelling
  • Advanced proficiency with PSS/E, PSCAD and Powerfactory
  • Experience working on utility-scale energy storage system or renewables power system modelling.
  • Experience in NEM grid connection process including AEMO and NSP requirements
  • Experience working on utility-focused engineering projects and/or product design.
  • Awareness of Australian engineering codes of practices, standards, and guidelines.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a small, fast-paced team and make critical decisions quickly
  • Willingness to learn, adapt and develop in a fast-paced sector
  • Willingness to travel periodically
