Location:

Ideally, this role will be based at Akaysha's Head Office in Melbourne, Cremorne. We'd also consider our Sydney CBD office, as an alternate location.

We're open to a hybrid working style; spend time in the office and at home.

Reporting to:

Senior Manager, Commercial. 

The role:

Working closely with Senior and General Commercial Managers, this position plays an important role in implementing market strategy, executing new business development opportunities, leading commercial negotiations for project agreements, and executing on Akaysha's contracted revenue streams.
 
As a Commercial Manager you'll be responsible for overseeing all commercial aspects of a business; ensuring profitability, risk management, and long-term strategic growth - in addition, you'll be involved in optimising commercial outcomes. You'll enjoy being a part of a dynamic team that has the opportunity to substantially influence major decisions in the energy sector and have a material impact on accelerating the Energy Transition.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Be a lead and active contributor to building, developing and managing the ‘best in market’ origination and deal execution of offtake agreements, including support on offtake design workshops
  • Develop, evaluate and implement new offtake products and offerings - this may involve traditional FCAS services, trading/ arbitrage, tolling, and virtual/financial hedge products, as well as more strategy partnerships with offtakers/wholesalers to develop more innovative value driven products with range of tenor/market benefits
  • Support with the scoping of new markets, including regulatory and policy developments, working with external advisors and consultants, to identify strategic commercial opportunities and strategic focus areas for the business
  • Conduct market analysis to identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities in the battery energy storage market
  • Support in advocating to government and other policyholders on regulatory developments, including through participation in industry associations, and internal co-ordination across Akaysha pillars for technical, market, finance and legal input to regulatory developments
  • Support with Akaysha’s procurement strategy, including development p procurement processes, ensuring supply chain efficiency and aligning procurement practices with business goals
  • Working closely with the Development and Delivery team (and other pillars), to identify, analyse new market opportunities in Australia, specifically focused on commercial opportunities to partner with developers, landowners, NSPs
  • Originate and structure deal opportunities, including developing and structuring from conception through to term sheet/ MOU and co-ordination across all Akaysha pillars for input on commercial opportunities
  • Lead and facilitate monthly business development opportunity workshops, shaping the discussion on commercial strategies and initiatives. Ensure these workshops effectively identify and address emerging business development opportunities
  • Prepare and present business development updates on a bi-monthly basis to the Executive/Leadership team, providing detailed insights into new opportunities, market developments, and strategic recommendations. 
  • Lead the negotiation of commercial terms and coordinate technical review for project documents, including battery supply agreements and balance of plan agreements
  • Collaborate with legal, technical, and finance teams to ensure project documents reflect Akaysha’s commercial and operational goals and that commercial timelines align with project development and FID timelines
  • Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships, leading communication efforts and ensuring that all supplier engagements align with Akaysha’s commercial strategy and operational timelines
  • Manage and coordinate cross-pillar efforts for government tender opportunities, including overseeing the preparation and submission of System Strength RIT-Ts and Capacity Investment Scheme bids, ensuring timely submission and alignment with Akaysha’s commercial strategy
  • Support the Commercial and Finance and Investments team through FID, including on lender Q&A and FID packs

What you'll bring:

  • Experience in leading outcome driven teams across the energy/infra/projects sector.
  • Exposure to the NEM.
  • Knowledge and understanding of revenue structures for a BESS.
  • Leading commercial negotiations on structuring activities, e.g JV, development partnerships, call/put options. Strong performance in a degree from a top university in a relevant subject
  • Ability to lead complex commercial negotiations with a range of counterparties and ultimately execute deals from inception through to execution
  • Overseeing the end-to-end management of commercial terms for projects
  • Ability to evaluate complex scenarios, identify key issues, and make informed, strategic decisions to achieve ideal results.
  • An ability to collect, analyse and interpret complex commercial and technical information
  • Executive level communication while presenting complex commercial opportunities and updates to Leadership / Executive / Investment Committee.
  • Self-starter, hunger to learn, ability to deal with ambiguity and able to adapt and thrive
  • Evidence of strong performance in team-oriented environments
  • An ability to communicate and collaborate with both technical and non-technical parties
