Location:
Ideally, this role will be based at Akaysha's Head Office in Melbourne, Cremorne. We'd also consider our Sydney & Brisbane offices as an alternate location.

The role:

The Senior Electrical Engineer will play a key role in leading the electrical and control system design and delivery of Akaysha's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This includes developing concept layouts, SLDs, and cable schedules; sizing BESS systems; and producing technical specifications for BoP contractors. The engineer will manage BoP contractor deliverables, attend FATs and SATs as needed, and assist during construction and commissioning phases. Additional responsibilities include liaising with AEMO and network providers, maintaining and improving technical documentation, leading risk and failure mode analyses and supporting asset management planning.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the BESS electrical, mechanical and control system design and delivery on multi-megawatt-scale energy storage systems.
  • Understand the inputs that are required to size a BESS.
  • Work collaboratively with the broader Akaysha engineering team to successfully integrate BESS technology with the overall project portfolio.
  • Produce concept BESS layouts, Single Line Diagrams (SLD’s) and Cable Schedules.
  • Contribute to the project feasibility review (Gate Review) slide packs from a technical perspective to ensure projects are constructable and bankable
  • Produce technical specifications for the BoP Contractor to tender against.
  • Provide BoP information to the Grid Connections Managers to allow the GPS to be commenced.
  • Help with selection of the BoP Contractor and manage the engineering deliverables (e.g. design reviews) and review/analysis of the BoP contractors choice of component suppliers and equipment being supplied.
  • Attend BoP Equipment FAT and SAT’s when deemed required by the project
  • Support the Construction and Commissioning teams by responding to technical questions as they arise. (Including Hold point testing).
  • Liaise with AEMO, Network Service Providers and Contractors on the specification, design, commissioning and operations of primary and secondary electrical systems.
  • Assist with the update of technical templates e.g. BoP Technical Specifications.
  • Lead Failure Mode Analysis workshops, root cause analysis and other engineering optimisation and due diligence activities
  • Support/Develop Asset Management plans (including condition monitoring), operations protocols and oversee maintenance practices.
  • Actively promote and ensure health and safety through understanding and implementing workplace health and safety obligations

What you'll bring:

  • BS or MS in Electrical, Electronic or Power Systems Engineering
  • 8+ years experience in a generation, renewables, transmission or distribution electrical engineering role
  • Extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, calculations, application of engineering methods and materials.
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of primary and secondary electrical system design for renewable generators and HV substations
  • Have an understanding of SCADA and communications systems in a substation environment.
  • Experience working on utility-scale energy storage systems, renewable energy project or transmission system design and delivery. 
  • Familiarity with the National Electricity Rules and Generator Performance Standards
  • Awareness of Australian engineering codes of practices, standards, and guidelines.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
