Specialist Electrical Engineer, Primary Systems.

Cremorne, Victoria, Australia

Are you ready to help build a brighter, cleaner tomorrow?

At Akaysha Energy, we’re building big, fast, and with purpose. Since 2021, we’ve grown to over 200 people across four countries, and we’re proud to lead the energy transition with mega-scale battery storage solutions that we design, build, own and operate.

Backed by BlackRock, we’re a portfolio company under Global Infrastructure Partners working to make clean, reliable energy accessible around the world. But what we are really building is a better future for everyone we share the planet with.

In this role, you’ll be the go-to technical expert for Electrical Primary Systems within Akaysha’s global Battery Energy Storage projects. Most days, you’ll dive into the detailed planning and design of electrical balance of plant systems - reviewing specs, solving design challenges, and making sure every project aligns with our technical standards.

You’ll work closely with teams across Australia, the US, Japan, and Europe, collaborating to ensure that our projects meet the highest standards worldwide. Whether you’re approving a key design decision, troubleshooting an issue on a current build, or developing standards for upcoming projects, your input will guide our work from initial concepts through construction and operations.

Expect to be hands-on with design reviews, provide technical support to engineers, and oversee compliance at every stage. Your expertise will shape the outcomes of projects at every phase, helping deliver reliable, world-class BESS solutions around the globe.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead design reviews of site electrical drawings, schematics, diagrams, and reports
  • Develop technical specifications for BoP contractors and assist in tendering processes
  • Formulate condition monitoring strategies
  • Collaborate with the wider Akaysha engineering team, contributing to consistent and effective global practices
  • Provide technical input for project feasibility (Gate Reviews) to ensure constructability and bankability
  • Supply electrical design details to Grid Connections Managers to facilitate GPS initiation
  • Participate in Factory and Site Acceptance Tests (FAT & SAT) as required
  • Support Construction and Commissioning teams by addressing technical queries and evaluating design changes for safety, cost, reliability, and performance
  • Assist Operations teams with root cause analysis, maintenance strategies, modification reviews, and risk assessments
  • Liaise with AEMO, Network Service Providers, and Contractors on specification, design, commissioning, and operation of primary systems
  • Continuously improve technical templates, tools, calculators, and design resources
  • Lead workshops in Failure Mode Analysis, root cause investigation, and economic optimisation.

What you’ll bring:

  • High Voltage Equipment Knowledge: Design and operation of transformers, circuit breakers, cables, disconnectors/earth switches, surge arresters. Includes transformer specification, maintenance and testing, as well as cable testing and monitoring.
  • Primary Substation Design: Layout for Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substations, including clearance requirements and grounding practices.
  • Electrical System Modelling & Analysis: Experience with short-circuit analysis, load flow studies, insulation coordination, arc flash, and electromagnetic field (EMF) studies.
  • Protection & Coordination: Implementation of protection schemes and secondary systems interface, plus expertise in SCADA and communications within substations.
  • Electrical Design Standards & Codes: Familiarity with AS, IEC, IEEE, NEC, ANSI, and NESC standards, as well as BESS guidelines, National Electricity Rules (NER), and Generator Performance Standards.
  • Earthing and Lightning Protection: Conducting risk assessments and designing comprehensive protection systems.
  • Busbar Design & Cable Sizing: Layout and stress calculations for high-voltage busbars, plus expertise in cable routing and thermal analysis.
  • Construction & Installation Methods: Practical knowledge of onsite processes and commissioning activities.

If you’re interested in tackling real engineering challenges and want to help shape practical energy solutions at Akaysha, you’ll find opportunities at Akaysha to see your ideas and skills make a direct impact on projects that matter.

We believe diverse teams build better solutions for the planet and its people. We’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, supported, and able to do their best work, no matter their background, identity, or lived experience.
