The Assistant Corporate Controller will play a critical leadership role within the Finance organization, supporting the Corporate Controller in managing the accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance functions of a rapidly growing construction company specializing in hyperscale data center white space fit-out projects.
This position will oversee the monthly close process, financial statement preparation, consolidation of project financial results, revenue recognition, audit support, treasury coordination, and corporate accounting functions. The Assistant Corporate Controller will serve as a key business partner to Finance, Operations, Project Management, Procurement, and Executive Leadership to ensure the company's financial reporting is accurate, timely, compliant, and scalable.
The ideal candidate brings a combination of strong corporate accounting expertise and some project accounting experience with multi-state project operations.
- This is a full-time salaried role offering $145,000-$160,000 (commensurate with experience) full benefits, paid travel, and advanced training.
- This is hybrid role working out of our Woodbridge, NJ office 2 days per week.
Key Responsibilities
Corporate Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Assist in leading the weekly reporting, monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Prepare and review consolidated financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Ensure the accuracy and completeness of balance sheet reconciliations and general ledger activity.
- Manage revenue recognition and construction contract accounting.
- Oversee month-end accruals, allocations, and journal entries.
- Support board reporting, lender reporting, and executive financial packages.
- Maintain accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.
Construction Accounting Oversight
- Review project accounting activities including:
- Job costing
- WIP schedules
- Cost-to-complete estimates
- Percentage-of-completion calculations
- Change order accounting
- Retainage tracking
- Partner with Operations and Project Management to validate project financial performance.
- Analyze project profitability, margin trends, and cost variances.
- Ensure consistency of project accounting practices across the organization.
- Monitor project revenue recognition and billing compliance.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Assist in designing and maintaining internal control frameworks.
- Develop financial and operational process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies.
- Coordinate annual financial audits and tax engagements.
- Support insurance audits, labor audits, and bonding requirements.
- Maintain documentation supporting lender, banking, and compliance requests.
Cash Management & Treasury Support
- Assist with cash forecasting and liquidity management.
- Monitor working capital and project cash flow trends.
- Support banking relationships and treasury functions.
- Coordinate construction draw schedules and lender reporting requirements.
- Oversee payment approvals and cash disbursement controls.
Team Leadership
- Assist in managing and mentoring accounting staff.
- Support professional development and succession planning within the Finance team.
- Establish department performance standards and best practices.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Drive automation and efficiency initiatives within accounting and finance processes.
- Optimize utilization of ERP and project management platforms.
- Participate in system implementations, upgrades, and integrations.
- Improve workflows between accounting, procurement, payroll, and project operations.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Strong knowledge of:
- U.S. GAAP
- General Ledger
- Month/Quarter/Year end close
- Percentage-of-completion accounting
- Accruals
- Revenue recognition
- Job costing
- Financial statement preparation
- Budgeting and Forecasting
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with ERP systems such as Sage Intacct, Sage Construction, Vista, or similar.
Preferred
- CPA designation.
- Public accounting experience.
- Project Accounting experience.
- Experience supporting multi-state construction operations.
- Working knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax requirements.
- Experience with Procore or comparable construction management software.
- Familiarity with project controls, construction lending, and bonding requirements.
- Experience working in rapidly growing organizations.
