The Opportunity

We're an Engineering and Product team of ten - and growing! Reporting to our head of engineering, we are looking for backend engineers to join us. This is a great opportunity to be a foundational member of our technical team with significant opportunities for professional growth.

Our tech stack is React, React Native, NodeJS, NestJS TypeScript, SQL, AWS, Docker, and AWS cdk. We are a Google Suite, Jira, Slack, and Notion shop for internal collaboration.

As a core member of our collaborative and product-focused technical team, you'll architect and build the backend infrastructure that powers Allara's patient and provider experiences. Our ideal new teammate is someone who balances deep technical expertise in backend systems with being mission-driven. We look for "helpers" across all functions as we scale, people with an affinity for helping patients solve complex health challenges through technology. We are also looking for folks with experience building scalable, secure systems, designing robust APIs, and who excel at data architecture and infrastructure optimization.

Location: Hybrid SoHo office in NYC at least three days a week (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday) with flexibility as needed OR Remote (U.S).

Your Impact

  • Design and implement scalable, secure APIs and microservices that power our care delivery platform
  • Architect and optimize database schemas, query performance, and data pipelines
  • Contribute to the design and deployment of backend services in AWS, collaborating with DevOps on containerization and IaC
  • Lead backend system design decisions and establish architectural patterns and best practices
  • Develop integration solutions with third-party healthcare systems and services
  • Ensure platform security, HIPAA compliance, and data privacy across all backend systems
  • Support code quality through code reviews, automated testing, and comprehensive documentation
  • Drive continuous improvement in our engineering practices, including deployment processes, monitoring, and incident response
  • Collaborate with frontend engineers to design effective API contracts and data models
  • Investigate and resolve complex platform performance issues and incidents

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience in backend software engineering (5+ years) with a track record of building scalable, production systems
  • Deep expertise in server-side programming languages and frameworks (NodeJS/TypeScript preferred)
  • Strong understanding of API design principles (REST, GraphQL) and microservices architecture
  • Strong database design and optimization skills (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar)
  • Solid experience developing applications on cloud platforms, ideally with AWS (EC2, RDS, Lambda, SQS, etc.)
  • Proficiency with containerization (Docker) and familiarity with orchestration (ECS, Kubernetes)
  • Understanding of infrastructure-as-code tools (AWS CDK preferred), with an emphasis on using them to support development and deployment workflows
  • Comfortable with monitoring, logging, and alerting systems (Datadog, New Relic, or similar)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with a proven ability to debug complex distributed systems
  • Strong collaborator and communicator, with demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams

Bonus Points

  • Experience in regulated industries, especially healthcare (HIPAA compliance)
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and message queuing systems
  • Experience with authentication/authorization systems and security best practices
  • Familiarity with React/React Native for better frontend collaboration

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
