Team Overview
Reporting to the Sr. Counsel, Director of the Center for Free Speech, the Free Speech Team advances freedom of speech through litigation, advocacy, and strategic public engagement. Legal Counsel support this mission by drafting and reviewing public-facing materials, shaping messaging in coordination with communications and marketing, and ensuring legal accuracy.
The team also builds key allied relationships and collaborates with litigation and legislative teams to meet strategic goals. Legal Counsel may also contribute limited research and support for active litigation efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research for free speech advocacy and resources.
- Review and be knowledgeable about complaints, motions, briefs, and other documents so that you can effectively review all public statements/content on free speech cases.
- Represent ADF’s free speech advocacy efforts in court of public opinion.
- Confer with colleagues to establish and verify facts, create accurate messaging, etc.
- Cooperate with Development team, including speaking engagements and other events.
- Interact with media regarding cases and issues.
- Advise allied attorneys on legal issues within areas of competence.
- Network and develop relationships with allied groups and attorneys and/or potential allied groups and attorneys.
Minimum Qualifications
- J.D., active license in at least one US state bar and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction within one year.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Westlaw.
- Clear and effective communicator, both written and verbal.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Skilled in project and time management.
