VP, Strategic Planning

Overview: 

The Vice President, Strategic Planning is a senior enterprise leader and key member of the Financial & Strategic Planning leadership team, serving as a strategic partner and trusted advisor to the SVP, Financial & Strategic Planning and executive leadership team. This role is responsible for driving enterprise-wide strategic alignment, execution governance, and portfolio prioritization in support of Alnylam's 2030 strategy.

The Vice President will serve as a highly visible enterprise leader, influencing cross-functional decision-making, driving strategic trade-off discussions, and facilitating executive alignment across complex business issues. Success in this role requires exceptional strategic acumen, executive presence, organizational leadership, and the ability to mobilize leaders across the enterprise to achieve transformative business outcomes.  Strategic Planning under this leader will be responsible for Alignment, Timing & Coordination (ATC), the enterprise initiative focused on integrating key projects focused on delivering our 2030 objectives, as well as the Strategic Planning Center of Excellence, which includes the corporate goals process, program management of enterprise initiatives and thought partnership across the company. As the leader of Alignment, Timing & Coordination (ATC), the VP will establish the operating framework that enables effective execution of the company's most critical strategic priorities. The role will ensure enterprise investments, resources, and change initiatives are aligned with strategic objectives, business performance expectations, and organizational capacity.

Key Responsibilities:

Alignment, Timing & Coordination (ATC) Leadership

  • Lead the enterprise Alignment, Timing & Coordination (ATC) framework to ensure successful execution of Alnylam's strategic priorities and long-range objectives.
  • Partner with the Executive Leadership Team to drive alignment on enterprise priorities, resource allocation, sequencing decisions, and strategic trade-offs.
  • Provide enterprise level visibility across the strategic initiative portfolio, including progress, dependencies, risks, resource demands, and organizational impact.
  • Anticipate emerging business risks, organizational capacity constraints, and execution challenges, proactively recommending mitigation strategies and executive actions.
  • Lead enterprise governance processes, including executive reviews, portfolio prioritization, strategic performance monitoring, and decision-making forums.
  • Drive organizational alignment and transparency through effective executive communications, governance forums, and enterprise-wide engagement strategies.

Enterprise Initiative Alignment & Resource Optimization

  • Lead enterprise discussions regarding prioritization, sequencing, resource allocation, execution capacity, and organizational readiness across strategic initiatives. Identify interdependencies, competing priorities, timing conflicts, and capacity constraints that may affect the strategic portfolio.
  • Recommend portfolio-level trade-offs and coordination approaches that optimize enterprise effectiveness and support achievement of strategic objectives.
  • Partner with initiative sponsors and leaders to ensure alignment with enterprise priorities, governance expectations, and approved resource plans.
  • Develop frameworks and reporting that provide leadership with consistent visibility into initiative demand, portfolio health, and organizational capacity.

Strategic Execution & Project Delivery

  • Translate enterprise strategy into actionable operating priorities, multi-year roadmaps, and measurable business outcomes.
  • Partner across Finance, Commercial, R&D, Technical Operations, Corporate Functions, and other key stakeholders to ensure strategic initiatives are integrated into planning and resource allocation processes.
  • Lead development of executive-level analyses, strategic recommendations, investment frameworks, and business cases that inform key enterprise decisions.
  • Monitor enterprise performance and strategic initiative outcomes, identifying opportunities to optimize execution, resource deployment, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging trends, market dynamics, and organizational capabilities that may impact achievement of strategic objectives.

Leadership Team Contribution

  • Serve as a key member of the Financial & Strategic Planning Leadership Team, contributing to the overall direction, strategy, and operating model of the function.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, providing strategic counsel and objective perspectives on complex business issues.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, transparency, and operational excellence across enterprise initiatives.
  • Build and leverage strong cross-functional partnerships to influence outcomes and drive organizational alignment.
  • Lead through influence across matrixed teams and senior stakeholders, ensuring successful delivery of enterprise priorities.
  • Develop organizational capabilities, planning processes, and governance mechanisms that strengthen the company's ability to execute strategy at scale.

Team Leadership

  • Strategic input on enterprise projects
  • Support key Strategic Planning projects (annual goal setting / measurement, decision analytics / support)
  • Build organizational capabilities in strategic planning, portfolio governance, enterprise prioritization, and resource alignment
  • Develop scalable planning and governance processes that support increasing organizational complexity.
  • Staff augmentation on major initiative startup
  • Oversight and integration of short term external consulting projects

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) strongly preferred with 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in strategic planning, corporate strategy, management consulting, finance, business operations, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise-wide strategic initiatives, transformations, or portfolio management efforts within complex global organizations.
  • Proven ability to influence executive leaders and drive decision-making across highly matrixed environments.
  • 5+ years experience in senior operating roles within industry.
  • Strong business, financial, and strategic acumen, with a track record of translating strategy into measurable business results.
  • Experience supporting executive leadership teams and participating in board-level or enterprise governance discussions preferred.
  • Biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, or similarly complex industry experience preferred.

The pay range below reflects the full-time base salary range we expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. Base pay will be determined based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skills, and education. This role is eligible for an annual short-term incentive award (e.g., bonus or sales incentive) and an annual long-term incentive award (e.g., equity).
