We were founded by families in East San José who wanted stronger academics and more support for their children. Alpha is a free, TK-12 public charter school system on a mission to prepare the next generation of leaders in East San José.

Alpha Public Schools is a public charter school network of four schools educating approximately 1,900 scholars in east San Jose. Guided by the belief that our students belong in college, we ensure safe, inclusive, and student-centered learning environments to help our students thrive. What sets us apart is the very thing that makes us who we are– our community. Alpha was founded by a group of mothers on the eastside of San Jose who sought better educational opportunities for their students. We maintain a strong connection to our community and engage families in a collaborative approach to offer a holistic education to our students. 

A successful Dean of College Programs: 

A Dean of College Programs is a results-driven leader who believes that all students are capable of college success. This role will lead the implementation of Alpha’s college readiness vision across grades 9–12, aligning all programs and initiatives with our North Star graduation goal and College Success Scorecard metrics. The Dean of College Programs will prioritize strong collaboration across departments—especially with teachers, advisors, and families—to align all efforts with a clear graduation goal and college success metrics. As a member of the high school leadership team as well as working in partnership with the network college success and readiness team, the Dean of College Programs will lead with a student-centered mindset, ensuring every scholar has access to rigorous academic pathways, meaningful college preparation, and guidance tailored to their strengths, interests, and goals. Through strong management of a college-focused team, data-informed decision-making, and strategic initiatives such as financial aid campaigns, dual enrollment, and application season, the Dean of College Programs will create systems and opportunities that expand college access and readiness. Ultimately, a successful Dean of College Programs is both a systems-thinker and a people-developer, focused on removing barriers and expanding opportunities for college success for all students.

The Dean of College Programs is expected to:

Embody the mission, vision, and core beliefs of the school and the Alpha Public Schools network

  • Promote Alpha’s staff culture, mindsets, and values by managing self and others in a manner that creates a healthy, high-achieving environment where staff feel challenged, supported, and valued 
  • Oversee the implementation of the vision, mission, and Alpha’s North Star graduation goal from grades 9-12
  • Promote Alpha’s student culture, mindsets, and values, leading to 100% of students believing it is important to go to college
  • Create opportunities for meaningful parent involvement and champion parent engagement.
  • Work alongside Assistant Principals to plan and deliver professional development that leads to more meaningful and effective collaboration between teachers and the college success team

Oversee the college programming and success of Cindy Avitia High School students

  • Strengthen college readiness by aligning programs, projects, and professional development to college success scorecard metrics
  • Drive college preparation by helping students identify their strengths, interests, and academic goals to determine which colleges might be a good fit
    • Manage family conferences, ensuring all students and families know their student's path towards graduation and college
  • Oversee college culture across the CAHS campus, including College Prep classes, academic Advisory, school events, etc.
    • Managing college visits and/or fairs
    • Supporting college-related clubs and student leadership development
  • Support advisors in building college knowledge to help students stay on track with A-G credits, including providing academic resources where applicable
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, leaders, and families to support students’ college goals
    • Strengthen systems to ensure all students are on-track with A-G credits, including scheduling and auditing transcripts
  • Build and maintain relationships with local colleges and universities to create opportunities for access to Cindy Avitia High School students
  • Own and lead projects such as:
    • Financial Aid Campaign (completions and submissions)
    • Four-year college application season (completions and submissions)
    • Two-year college pathways and application season
    • Dual Enrollment across grade levels
    • College Success Scorecard Metrics strategically rolled out and implemented across CAHS campus

Manage and lead high school college preparation team 

  • Coach and supervise a team of College Prep Seminar Lecturers (2-4) through regular observations, data-driven coaching, and professional development designed to strengthen effectiveness in preparing students for college applications, enrollment and completion.
    • Support refinement of college prep seminar curriculum to better prepare students for college
  • Regularly review and analyze student performance data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities to ensure A-G credits are met and all senior students are eligible to apply to college
    • Maintain up-to-date A-G and college readiness tracking for students
    • Establish a team-wide expectation of data-driven planning and decision-making for academic and college readiness

You Possess…

  • A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred)
  • PPS credential (school counselling) 
  • 4 years of experience supporting high school students directly in the classroom or through an academic leadership role in college access programs
  • Experience assessing A-G data for college readiness 
  • Experience (formally or informally) coaching instructional staff (support staff and/or teachers)
  • Experience managing college and university partnerships

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with federal grant programs (ideal)
  • Experience in program development, maintenance, and sustainability
  • Lead counseling experience in academics and college/career readiness
  • Experience with CCGI, initiative rollout, project planning, management, and implementation
