Alpha Public Schools is a public charter school network of four schools educating approximately 1,900 scholars in east San Jose. Alpha was founded by a group of mothers on the eastside of San Jose who sought better educational opportunities for their students. A successful Community Organizer:
The successful Community Organizer at Alpha Public Schools, you will be responsible for co-creating the vision of parent leadership and driving parent organizing in the San Jose community. In this role, you will partner with school leaders to improve school advocacy in the East San Jose community by partnering effectively with school leaders, families, and community organizations to build parent power and support advocacy efforts in our community. This hands-on role is part of a dynamic advocacy and community engagement team based in San Jose. This position requires daily local travel within San Jose, a flexible schedule, and a willingness to work on weekends and evening hours (3-4 nights a week) as events demand.
The Alumni Advisor is expected to:
- Promote Alpha’s vision, mission, and values through community relationship building
- Identify, train and develop parent leaders in the principles and practices of community organizing
- Develop a network of teachers, parents, and community stakeholders to build power together in order to create a more equitable education system
- Work closely with with the Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement to co-create Alpha’s organizing strategy and campaigns that support regional goals
- Complete 10-15 one-on-one relational meetings every week with current and potential parent leaders and other important stakeholders that build organizing capacity and engagement
- Working with parent leaders and staff, develop and implement a strategy for successful charter renewals
- Build the capacity of parents to understand the San Jose educational landscape, key decision makers, and power of community
- Actively engage current and future Alpha parents in further investing in their leadership skills by building their capacity through training and coaching
- Plan and coordinate large public forums and meetings, led by parent leaders
- Foster community relationships and develop champions amongst community-based organizations, faith leaders, elected officials, civic and community leaders to build and sustain grassroots support for Alpha’s schools
- Serve as an ambassador for Alpha’s mission and advocacy

- Competitive salary commensurate with experience. The starting salary is $70,725 and goes up based on experience.

You Possess…
- Verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish (required)
- A sense of urgency and passion for social justice and equity in education, as well as a deep belief in charter schools as vital public school options for parents and students
- A commitment to developing parent leadership at the grassroots level
- Work or significant volunteer experience in low-income Latino communities or other communities of color
- Strong persuasive public speaking, writing, and analytical skills
- Capacity to think strategically and critically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting a community
- A bachelor’s degree or 2+ years experience of paid or voluntary community organizing work (Preferred)
- A valid driver’s license and access to a car for transportation
