The Opportunity at Altana

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to manage and enhance our payroll operations as we continue to grow. Reporting to the Director of People Operations, you will oversee the company’s payroll processes, including global payroll, commissions, bonuses, and payroll-related taxes across our global workforce. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the accounting team, people team, and other stakeholders, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all payroll and payroll related activities.

As a trusted partner within the organization, you will leverage your expertise to refine payroll systems, improve processes, and add measurable value to the company. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.


You Will

  • Manage and operate payroll systems, ensuring accurate and timely payroll for all employees.
  • Run, review, and audit payroll reports, identifying and resolving discrepancies proactively.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, controls, and regulatory requirements in all payroll processes.
  • Develop and maintain detailed SOPs and supporting documentation, adhering to best practices and company standards.
  • Partner with internal teams to address payroll-related inquiries and provide exceptional service.
  • Monitor payroll metrics, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Champion a commitment to excellence by maintaining meticulous attention to detail, eliminating errors, and preventing payroll adjustments.
  • Administer payroll to our global employees that are employee payments and expenses reimbursements under our global EOR solution. 
  • Reconcile state and local agency notices to underlying records and coordinate with payroll providers to maintain compliance. 
  • Support various ad hoc projects such as expense reimbursement requests, adjustments to taxable income, and tax registrations in new jurisdictions.
  • Ensure timely processing of all new hires, promotions, and terminations.

About You

  • 5+ years of experience in payroll or HR, with multi-country payroll experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in major payroll and ERP systems, such as ADP SmartCompliance.
  • Experience with PEOs that serve as an EOR for global employees. 
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, including experience with formulas and pivot tables.
  • A Payroll Certification (e.g., CPP or FPC) is a strong plus.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and confidentiality.
  • Handles sensitive information with good judgment and discretion. 

This role can be based in Brooklyn, NY, USA, Boston, MA, USA, or Washington, D.C., USA, with hybrid work flexibility and candidates must be within commuting distance from our Williamsburg, Brooklyn office, Boston office, or our downtown D.C. office.
