About the role:
The LS-DYNA structural analyst’s role will apply engineering principles to support the design, development, and final verification across a variety of aerospace and defense development programs. The engineer is primarily expected to perform structural analysis using a mix of hand calculations, and finite element analysis (FEA) to support development from the conceptual design phase through to the deployment and operations phase. Primary tasks include building and maintaining finite element models (FEM), authoring stress analysis reports, and supporting test planning. Other common tasks include using FEA to model heat transfer, modelling pyrotechnic & pneumatic gas dynamics, and multi-body kinematics of deployable systems. The analyst will often work independently within a small, fast-moving team. Excellent organization, collaboration, and communication skills are essential parts of the job
Responsibilities:
- Applies theories of physics to engineering problems to quantify and predict system performance, support concept of operations (CONOPS) decisions, and support derivation of subsystem requirements.
- Assesses structural viability of aerostructures, mechanisms, and frangible systems by:
- Generating free body diagrams, determining load paths, calculating reaction forces and internal loads, and developing shear and moment diagrams
- Using classic aerospace industry analysis techniques (classical hand calculations, fatigue, and damage tolerance analysis)
- Build system and component level finite element models.
- Develop and anchor system and component level loads from finite element models, test data, and engineering standards.
- Contribute to test plan development and execution by providing technical oversight for measurement of stress, strain, displacement, acceleration, shock, and vibration data during ground and flight tests.
- Verifies and documents system compliance to requirements.
- Supports development of engineering reports, presentations, and formal design reviews
Education and Experience:
- BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
- Experience performing structural analysis.
- Preferably in the aerospace, defense, automotive, or nuclear industries
- Strong technical knowledge of finite element analysis with experience including:
- Prediction and validation of frequency dependent structural dynamics and loads
- Modal, response spectrum and random vibration analysis
Qualifications;
- This role will be specifically focused on dynamic and static analysis of structures using LS-Dyna;
- Must have non-linear analysis experience and LS-Dyna experience.
- Deep understanding of LS-DYNA including element formulations, material models, contact types and algorithm, and meshing methodologies.
- Experience with running both the explicit and implicit LS-DYNA solver.
- Experience analyzing problems that involve ductile failure, strain rate dependency, airbag modeling, impact, drop tests, and/or large deformations.
- Experience with setting up and post processing analyses using LS Pre/Post.
- Composite analysis experience
- Experience with commercial FEA, meshing, and 3D CAD software tools: FEMAP, NASTRAN, SIMCENTER 3D, Ansys Workbench, Ansys Classic, LS-DYNA, Abaqus, Radioss, SolidWorks, CATIA or similar
- Experience with common aerospace materials such as high strength aluminum alloys, nickel-based superalloys, titanium alloys, and stainless-steel alloys
- Experience with computer programming languages such as MATLAB, Octave, Python, VBA, C++, C#, or Julia for automation of analysis tasks such as using a program’s API, plotting result data, or performing coupled trade studies.
- Strong written and verbal communication, technical report writing skills, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with material testing and material model development for LS-DYNA including failure criterion.
- Desire and ability to conduct internal LS-Dyna analysis trainings, and act as SME
- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance
