Expert Database Administrator(Azure DBA)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and execute complex SQL Server database migrations to Azure SQL, Azure Managed Instances, Amazon RDS, or EC2-hosted SQL Server.
  • Perform environment assessments, cloud readiness checks, and migration planning including downtime strategy and rollback planning.
  • Design, implement, and maintain high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) solutions, including Always On Availability Groups, replication, log shipping, and backups to cloud.
  • Optimize performance of existing environments using execution plan analysis, indexing, partitioning, and resource monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell and T-SQL scripts to automate routine database tasks, patching, and deployments.
  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to implement CI/CD pipelines for database deployments using tools like Redgate, Flyway, or Azure DevOps.
  • Monitor and ensure the security, integrity, and compliance of database systems in regulated environments.
  • Implement and tune cloud-native features such as Azure Elastic Pools, AWS Multi-AZ RDS, PaaS scaling, and hybrid connectivity (VPN, ExpressRoute).
  • Troubleshoot critical incidents in production, including root cause analysis and performance bottlenecks across cloud/on-prem databases.
  • Document architecture, SOPs, and operational runbooks for the database environment.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience administering and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server (2012–2022) in enterprise production environments.
  • Proven expertise in migrating large, critical databases to Azure SQL, Azure Managed Instance, Amazon RDS, and SQL Server on EC2.
  • Strong understanding of SQL Server architecture, including memory, I/O, query processing, and concurrency models.
  • Deep experience in T-SQL scripting, performance tuning, index management, and execution plan analysis.
  • Hands-on experience implementing and managing:
    • Always On Availability Groups (multi-subnet, cross-region)
    • SQL Server Failover Clustering (FCI)
    • Log Shipping, Database Mirroring, Replication
    • Backup strategies to local, Azure Blob, or AWS S3
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting production issues, including:
    • Blocking, deadlocks, slow queries
    • TempDB contention
    • Long-running transactions
    • Resource governance
  • Skilled in using performance diagnostic tools such as:
    • SQL Profiler, Extended Events, Query Store, DMVs
    • Third-party tools: SentryOne, Redgate, Idera, SolarWinds DPA
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-native features:
    • Azure Elastic Pools, Auto-failover Groups, Geo-replication
    • Amazon RDS Read Replicas, Multi-AZ Failover, Parameter Groups
  • Experience with PowerShell, Azure CLI, AWS CLI, and scripting automation for DB deployments, patching, and monitoring.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipeline tools (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Redgate Change Automation, Flyway).
  • Understanding of Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Terraform, ARM Templates, or AWS CloudFormation.
  • Working knowledge of containerization concepts (SQL Server in Docker for dev/test) and orchestration (Kubernetes is a plus).
  • Deep understanding of data security and compliance:
    • Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)
    • Row-Level Security
    • Always Encrypted
    • Audit logging
    • Data masking and classification
  • Experience in monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning for large-scale SQL workloads.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis (RCA), write technical documentation, and lead incident recovery processes.
  • Experience working in regulated environments (HIPAA, SOX, PCI, GDPR), with a focus on auditability and change control.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to present technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to mentor junior DBAs, collaborate across DevOps, SRE, and Architecture teams, and lead database-related transformation efforts.

Preferred Skills & Certifications

  • Certifications (Any of the following are highly desirable):
    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
    • AWS Certified: Database – Specialty
