Lab Description

The Kharchenko lab at Altos Labs San Diego Institute is studying how cells coordinate their activity within complex biological tissues, how these mechanisms break down in disease and injury, and the potential interventions that may improve tissue function. Our effort is focused on application and analysis of cutting-edge genomic assays to understand tissue cellular functions and cell coordination within tissues.

Altos Labs aims to foster scientific creativity, providing research labs with both resources and freedom needed to pursue fundamental scientific challenges, including the ability of individual labs to publish and present their work for wider scientific community.

Responsibilities

The Scientist or Senior Scientist in this position will be expected in efforts to develop, optimize, and apply genomic assays to study cell coordination within tissues in the context of different diseases, aging and rejuvenation. These may include approaches to for detailed interrogation of cellular state, on transcriptional, epigenetic, or proteomic level, spatially resolved assays, or approaches to trace cell history and lineage. The efforts of the Scientist will be supported by computational and experimental teams both within and outside Altos. The Scientist will be expected to lead experimental designs, author, and contribute to biological and methodological manuscripts, and contribute to seminars and other scientific initiations within Altos as well as a wider scientific community.

Who You Are

We are open to candidates with a range of experience, as the position can be filled at the Scientist I, Scientist II, or Senior Scientist level. The level of the position will depend on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology or a related discipline
  • A strong interest in studying tissue biology, aging and rejuvenation in a collaborative setting
  • Track record publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent knowledge of common molecular biology techniques
  • Experience in development, optimization, and application of genomic assays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Track record in developing of new single-cell, spatial, cell recording or lineage tracing assays
  • Cell fate decisions, reprogramming and stem cell biology
  • Experience with optimizations of assays and sample processing for analysis of pre-clinical and clinical tissue samples
  • Mechanisms of establishing and maintaining cellular epigenetic state
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

The salary range for San Diego:

  • Scientist I: $127,500 - $172,500
  • Scientist II: $150,000 - $228,800

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
