Freelance Technical Mentor (Data)

Employment Type: This role is a freelance position.

Work Hours: The required work hours are 15-20 hours per week, with a minimum of 2 days in-person at the Johannesburg hub.

ALX is seeking a Technical Mentor with strong technical skills who can clearly communicate complex data concepts, use data-driven approaches to assess learner progress, and drive continuous improvement in educational outcomes. ABOUT THE ROLE

ALX Africa is seeking a Freelance Technical Mentor (Data) to provide expert guidance and support to learners, helping them develop practical data skills to advance their careers. This role involves engaging with a global community of aspiring data professionals, fostering growth and continuous learning, based in person at our Johannesburg hub.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learning Support: Mentor learners individually and in groups in-person and online by simplifying complex data concepts and guiding them through practical applications. 
  • Curriculum Delivery Support: Support program delivery with hands-on projects and examples across digital and in-person platforms. Facilitate interactive workshops and foster a collaborative, inclusive learning environment that supports community-building.
  • Technical Guidance: Support learners in coding, statistical modeling, machine learning, and data engineering fundamentals.
  • Project Coaching: Guide learners in applying skills to practical projects, including data cleaning, visualization, and building end-to-end solutions.
  • Problem-Solving: Help learners troubleshoot technical issues, clarify concepts, and build confidence in tackling challenges.
  • Feedback and Assessment: Use data-driven insights to monitor learner progress, provide actionable feedback and continuously improve learning outcomes.
  • Industry Expertise: Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices to share and advance learner skillset.
  • Reporting: Track and report learner engagement and success metrics.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential

  • Data proficiency in at least two of the following areas: 
    • Data Analytics (Excel, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, etc.)
    • Data Science (Python, R, machine learning, statistics, etc.)
    • Data Engineering (ETL processes, cloud platforms, databases, etc.)
  • Proven ability to simplify complex technical concepts and effectively mentor learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience facilitating interactive workshops or training sessions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to monitoring learner progress and improving outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to motivate and engage learners.

Preferable

  • Familiarity with learning management systems and digital content delivery platforms.
  • Background in career coaching or learner development.
  • Prior experience in an educational or mentorship role within a tech or data-focused environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering or a related field with a strong analytical or numerical focus.
