Position Summary
The primary responsibility of an Academic Tutor is to support students to become more independent learners, persist in school, and reach their goals. Academic Tutors provide individual and/or group tutoring to students across a broad range of programs.
*Please note this role is for our 2025-2026 school year. Employment is scheduled to tentatively begin towards the end of August.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide academic assistance to assigned students, either in a group or individually.
- Establish liaison with the teacher and work under the teacher's direction, if necessary to assist the student.
- Be responsible for maintaining records on each student who is being tutored, including follow-up and periodic assessment.
- Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
- Help students develop self-confidence, raise self-concept, and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
- Help students develop a high level of motivation in academic areas.
- Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
- Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
- Serve as a role model for students being served.
Minimum Experience and Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must have strong math and reading skills.
- Ability to work 4 hours daily Monday - Friday, hours are typically 10AM-2PM
- Comfort with remote learning systems (e.g. Google Classroom, on-line curriculum platforms).
- Strong command of all Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs.
- A high degree of comfort and confidence engaging children in learning and interfacing with parents/caregivers.
- Commitment to create and maintain a safe and responsive learning environment.
- Capacity to develop strong relationships based on trust, respect, effective communication, and common goals.
- May assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or his/her/their designee
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple obligations and initiatives, strong attention to detail, and excellent time management.
- Completion and pass pre-employment Fingerprinting and Reference check process
- Legally eligible to work in the United States
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 1 year experience teaching, tutoring, counseling, and/or interaction with children.
- New York State Teacher Assistant Certification
- Ability to speak, write, and understand Spanish fluently.

- Laptop, Promethean board, classroom, and office equipment
Work Environment/Physical Effort:
- Regularly required to sit, stand for long periods of time, walk, climb stairs, speak loudly and clearly, visually observe, hear, operate a computer, and other classroom, school and office equipment, reach with hands and arms, bend down, and must occasionally lift, move and/or support up to 20 pounds. Work is being performed in a traditional multi-floor school environment with limited to no elevator access.

Compensation
Amber Charter Schools strictly follow a salary schedule for each role to ensure our continued commitment towards pay equity. The expected salary range for this role is $18-$20 depending on verified relevant work experience, highest level of completed education, and required certifications and/or licenses for the role. This is a non exempt position.
