Outside Sales Engineer
About us: At Nevada Systems Group, we deliver HVAC systems designed for the unique demands of Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. From custom-engineered solutions to retrofit projects, our focus is on efficiency, reliability, and performance - reinforced by the expertise and service that set us apart.
Position Summary: The Outside Sales Engineer is responsible for driving revenue growth through the application of engineered HVAC solutions within the commercial built environment. This role operates at the intersection of mechanical system design, applied engineering, and technical sales, supporting contractors, consulting engineers, architects, and end users across all phases of the project lifecycle - from conceptual design and equipment specification through procurement, installation, and commissioning. The position requires a strong understanding of HVAC system design principles, thermodynamics, psychometrics, and equipment performance characteristics, with specialized focus on commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems including air handlers, rooftop units, chillers, boilers, variable air volume (VAV) systems, energy recovery ventilators, and building automation controls.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute account strategies to grow market share within assigned territories, targeting mechanical contractors, consulting engineers, and design-build firms.
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and schedules to identify opportunities for system optimization and equipment application.
- Provide engineered equipment selections based on project requirements, including airflow calculations, static pressure analysis, thermal load considerations, and system compatibility assessments.
- Support the design and application of commercial HVAC systems including rooftop units, air handling units, chillers, boilers, VAV systems, energy recovery equipment, and building automation integration in accordance with applicable codes including International Mechanical Code (IMC), ASHRAE standards, and local energy codes.
- Collaborate with design engineers and contractors to influence basis-of-design specifications and ensure proper system integration.
- Deliver technical product support, including submittal reviews, performance verification, and troubleshooting during installation and commissioning phases.
- Maintain strong technical relationships with manufacturers to stay aligned on product capabilities, engineering updates, and application best practices.
- Generate and present technical proposals, including equipment selections, system schematics, psychrometric analysis, and value-engineered alternatives.
- Track and manage project pipelines through CRM tools, ensuring accurate forecasting and documentation of project milestones.
- Participate in ongoing technical training, industry events, and manufacturer programs to maintain current knowledge of HVAC technologies, ASHRAE standards, and energy efficiency requirements.
Qualifications and Core Technical Competencies
- The ideal candidate will have 5–7 years of experience in applied HVAC engineering, technical sales, or mechanical systems design within commercial or industrial markets.
- Direct experience with commercial HVAC systems including air handlers, rooftop units, chillers, boilers, VAV systems, energy recovery equipment, or building automation is essential.
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Strong understanding of HVAC system fundamentals is required, including psychrometries, airflow dynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration cycles, and hydronic system design.
- Experience interpreting mechanical plans, specifications, and submittals is essential, along with familiarity with applicable codes and standards including International Mechanical Code (IMC), ASHRAE 90.1 energy standards, ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation requirements, and local building codes.
- Ability to perform equipment selection and system-level analysis using manufacturer software and engineering tools such as load calculation programs, duct design software, and energy modeling applications is required.
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple complex projects concurrently is necessary. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, are essential.
- Proven ability to negotiate and influence technical decisions in a competitive sales environment is required.
