Director of Marketing

Remote - US

About Medium

Medium is one of the world's most influential writing platforms, connecting millions of readers with ideas that matter. We're a small, dedicated team that cares deeply about craft, curiosity, and building something that lasts. We make decisions efficiently and iterate fast, think carefully, and take the work seriously, without taking ourselves too seriously.

About the Role

The last three years at Medium were about getting operationally fit. We did that. Now we're focused on what's next, which is why we need a Director of Marketing to join our team and lead Medium’s marketing function through a generational inflection point.

Most growth marketing starts with building an audience: Medium already has one. From our millions of monthly readers to our dedicated community of writers to our high-traffic blog, we have a well-known brand and broad user base. Our challenge is more unique: transforming this massive catalog of under-leveraged owned assets into paid subscribers. As our Director of Marketing, you’ll build the machine that does this.

In the short term, you’ll be a hands-on operator getting this work off the ground, architecting and implementing Medium’s lifecycle marketing programs, and unlocking the conversion potential of existing channels. In the long term, you’ll help define what marketing looks like at Medium by building scalable solutions that meet current and future needs, moving between strategic and execution work. All the while, you’ll lead and implement our AI transformation across marketing, determining where and when AI truly augments our work.

This is a role for an experienced marketer excited by the prospect of both hands-on execution and long-term strategy development. Medium’s marketing team is small, but with the potential to have an outsized impact on the company’s growth. Partnering with our leadership team, leading our lifecycle email manager, and maturing the overall marketing function with us, you’ll elevate engagement for Medium readers and writers around the world.

What You Will Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Oversee and run conversion campaigns across email, social, notifications, and Medium’s website and blog to significantly enhance the conversion of unpaid readers to paid subscribers
  • Research and build AI-based workflows for Medium’s lifecycle marketing
  • Manage and direct the work of our lifecycle email manager, enabling them to develop a segmentation and sequencing strategy
  • Map the full reader funnel — from first visit to paid subscriber — and identify where the marketing leverage is
  • Run experiments and measure results (test offers, experiment with messaging, track timing, etc. ) until you discover what scales
  • Oversee the development of both reader and writer marketing strategies, with reader conversion as the initial short-term focus
  • Attend Medium’s twice-yearly, in-person offsites (hosted in locations around the U.S.).

Who You Are (Skills, Knowledge & Expertise)

  • Proven Startup Operator - You have a track record of results, and are comfortable owning and executing marketing campaigns in ambiguous and fluid environments
  • AI-forward - You have a clear POV on how AI is changing marketing — and ideally, have experience using it to accelerate your work. But you’re also discerning in understanding where and when it doesn’t add value. This is especially relevant because we're marketing a humans-first writing platform in an AI moment.
  • User Growth - Proven experience growing a paid subscriber base with an aptitude for thinking in funnels, segments, and conversion rates.
  • Hands-on - Excited about being hands-on in building and executing end-to-end campaigns, with a strong taste for what works and what doesn’t. You’re comfortable being execution-first (writing copy, running experiments, conducting analysis) with a focus on impact.
  • Analytical - Deeply analytical with experience gathering and leveraging data to drive A/B testing, experimentation frameworks, product development, and impact assessment.
  • Stakeholder Management - You’re stellar at stakeholder management, and you can build productive cross-functional and executive relationships, offering and receiving feedback constructively.
  • Marketing Strategy - You’re experienced in setting and lead strategic direction for marketing teams, with an eye towards the future
  • Comfortable with Ambiguity - You’re comfortable working with ambiguity, pivoting based on new information and strategy, and are comfortable flexing into new responsibilities as they come up

Benefits

In addition to the new skills you'll pick up, here's what else you'll enjoy by working at Medium:

  • Working with a fully distributed team: We’re fully remote and have teammates across the U.S. & France
  • Healthcare benefits covered at 100% for employees and 80% for dependents
  • Generous parental leave policy
  • Mental health support through Spring Health (or find a provider through Rula or Kaiser Mental Health Network)
  • Financial wellness support through Northstar
  • Stipends for co-working, professional development, wifi, and a one-time home office bonus
  • Unlimited PTO and standard company holidays
  • A discounted Medium membership

Read our guidance on AI use for candidates. We believe human ideas have the power to change how people think, for the better. That belief shapes how we hire. We use AI tools ourselves, but we’ve thought carefully about where it adds value and where it gets in the way of something important.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
