Web Developer
AIR is currently seeking a Web Developer to join AIR's FEWS NET (The Famine Early Warning Systems Network) project. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) is a leading provider of early warning and analysis on acute food insecurity around the world. The Web Developer supports research teams by building interactive web portals and data visualizations that bring research insights to life, using modern web technologies and ensuring secure, user-friendly, and visually compelling digital experiences.
This position will be located out of AIR's Kenya office.

Responsibilities
- Design and Develop Web Portals: Build responsive, user-friendly websites and web applications using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript to showcase research findings and data stories.
- Create Interactive Data Visualizations: Implement dynamic, visually compelling data visualizations that bring research insights to life, using libraries such as D3.js, Chart.js, or similar.
- Implement Front-End Features: Develop and theme user-facing features with a focus on usability, accessibility, and performance.
- Maintain and Optimize Web Assets: Ensure websites are secure, up-to-date, and functioning optimally by applying security patches, performing upgrades, and conducting regular testing and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with researchers, data scientists, and communications specialists to translate technical content into intuitive digital experiences.
- Support Deployment and Hosting: Assist with deploying web applications to cloud or on-premises environments, ensuring reliability and scalability.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
- Strong foundational knowledge ofHTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, with bonus points for experience in animation and scalable/modular CSS methodologies (e.g., BEM, SMACSS).
- Demonstrated interest and experience in building accessible, inclusive web interfaces that meet WCAG standards.
- Experience working with geospatial visualization tools such as Mapbox, Leaflet, or other GIS platforms.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including designers, developers, researchers, and QA testers.
- Quick learner with a strong desire to understand domain-specific knowledge, particularly in humanitarian, environmental, or data-driven research contexts.
- Commitment to continuous learning in the evolving fields of front-end development and data visualization.
- Enthusiasm for solving complex technical challenges in a mission-driven environment.
Skills:
- Proficiency in TypeScript / JavaScript.
- Strong experience withReactandD3.js, including writing reusable React components (e.g., in Storybook) and integrating D3 and React effectively to leverage their respective strengths.
- Familiarity with version control systems, especially Git.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when writing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate efficiently in a virtual work environment.
