What to know about this role
- We are a fully remote organization with team members in over 20 states within the US. Work from the comfort of your home, a local coffee shop or wherever in the U.S. brings you joy! However, please note that you MUST live in one of the following states to be considered for this role:
- Alabama, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, or Wisconsin!
- We are unable to consider candidates who require an H1-B sponsorship at this time.
- The salary range for this position is: $120,000 to $130,000 based upon experience. We are unable to negotiate higher than this range.

The impact of this role
The Director, Membership is responsible for understanding, growing, and deepening the membership base of the American Marketing Association. This role sets the vision and strategy for AMA's professional, group, and corporate membership programs, driving acquisition, engagement, and retention initiatives that deliver measurable value to members. The Director leads the development and execution of strategic plans that strengthen AMA's value proposition, expand its reach within the marketing profession, and cultivate a vibrant, growing community of marketing practitioners and leaders.
What you’ll be doing
Professional, Group & Corporate Membership Growth
- Sets the vision and leads the development of strategies and plans to grow AMA's professional, group, and corporate membership segments, with clear goals for acquisition, retention, and overall membership health.
- Develops and refines compelling membership value propositions tailored to each membership segment, ensuring benefits are clearly communicated and consistently delivered.
- Identifies and pursues new market opportunities to expand the corporate membership program, building relationships with marketing leaders, agencies, and organizations aligned with AMA's mission.
- Guides the collection, analysis, and reporting of critical membership data—including acquisition, renewal, and churn metrics—to inform strategic and operational decisions.
- Partners with the brand experience and marketing teams to develop campaigns, messaging, and digital strategies that drive membership awareness and growth.
- Benchmarks AMA membership programs against peer associations and industry best practices, incorporating insights into ongoing strategy refinement.
Member Experience & Value Proposition
- Provides strategic guidance on the overall membership experience, ensuring members at every level receive ongoing, meaningful value throughout their membership lifecycle.
- Collaborates with internal teams—including Marketing, Professional Development, Alliances, Communities & Journals—to curate and communicate a cohesive set of member benefits and resources.
- Champions exclusive access opportunities that differentiate AMA membership and reinforce the value of belonging.
- Supports research and innovation initiatives that help AMA better understand member needs, motivations, and satisfaction across all membership segments.
- Partners with internal teams to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into membership programs and outreach.
Volunteer & Community Alignment
- Facilitates the flow of information and ideas between AMA staff and volunteer leadership, building alignment around membership goals and growth priorities.
- Provides strategic guidance and support to chapter and cohort leaders to inspire alignment with national AMA membership vision, strategies, and goals.
- Identifies and supports volunteer-driven membership recruitment and retention initiatives that leverage the strength of AMA's local and professional chapter communities.
Team and Project Management
- Directly supervises the Assistant Manager, Professional Communities, providing leadership, mentorship, and professional development support.
- Determines operating priorities and plans to be executed by the team, establishing clear goals, accountability structures, and success metrics.
- Supervises the development and management of annual and special project budgets for membership programs, including approving budgets and securing necessary funding, staffing, and resources.
- Develops and maintains team structure, processes, and reporting mechanisms to ensure the effectiveness and continuous improvement of membership operations.
What you bring to the table
- At least five years of experience within a non-profit organization or membership association, leading membership strategy
- At least five years of experience directly managing a team
- Strong understanding of association membership models, member lifecycle management, volunteer engagement, and project management
- Experience with corporate membership or B2B relationship management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google Suite. Familiarity with content management systems (WordPress), customer relationship management systems (Salesforce), and project management tools (Asana)
- Ability to travel across the US for meetings and events approximately 6–8 times a year (typically 2–5 days with some weekends).

- Strong understanding of the American Marketing Association's membership structure and processes preferred

- Virtual Interview with the hiring manager and key stakeholders you’ll be working closely with
