Power Electronics Integration and Validation Intern
Company Overview
Amperesand is reinventing how the world powers its most critical systems.
We are facing a once-in-a-generation opportunity for infrastructure disruption. Electricity demand is skyrocketing, driven by AI factories, electric vehicles, and modern industrial growth. Energy supply is shifting to incorporate a more diverse mix of resources – including solar, gas, and batteries – at a massive scale.
And yet the power infrastructure behind our latest mega-projects hasn’t meaningfully changed in nearly 100 years. Supply chains for today’s infrastructure equipment can’t match the pace and sophistication of critical energy projects. Ampersand is building hardware and software that rewrites this broken power infrastructure playbook to support a new era of energy abundance.
We’ve built a new class of intelligent, software-defined power infrastructure products leveraging a decade of advanced medium voltage Solid State Transformer research that’s now ready for commercial deployment.
Our products and solutions go far beyond the capabilities of traditional electrical equipment. We make power systems that are faster to deploy, dramatically smaller and more efficient, and capable of supporting modern, dynamic energy needs for tomorrow’s most demanding energy consumers.
Scalable in-house advanced manufacturing capability is our foundation for meeting timeline and quality expectation to serve infrastructure customers around the world.
Amperesand is led by breakthrough energy hardware development veterans and funded by top tier investors who share our vision of building a category-defining energy technology company.
With hubs in San Francisco, Reno, and Singapore, our global team is laser focused on building foundational technology to solve the most pressing problems in power infrastructure at scale.
Join us in building the power foundation of the future!
Internship duration: Summer 2026 (with potential extension).
Role Summary
At Amperesand, you will help design, develop, and deploy test systems that validate high-voltage, high-power electronics used in our Medium Voltage (MV) products. You will work closely with hardware, firmware, and validation teams, participate in design reviews, and gain hands-on experience in MV labs, manufacturing processes, and debugging complex power systems. This role is ideal for students with strong fundamentals in electrical engineering, a first-principles mindset, and a desire to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
• Design, deploy, and maintain test systems for high-voltage power electronics.
• Define tester specifications, test methodologies, measurement approaches, and data analysis workflows.
• Participate in cross-functional design reviews to help create robust, scalable, and safe testing procedures.
• Work hands-on during test hardware bring-up, system debugging, and failure analysis.
• Support debugging of MV hardware using a solid understanding of electrical theory and instrumentation.
• Create clear documentation for test processes, bring-up steps, and deployment procedures to ensure smooth handoffs across teams and sites.
• Approach problems using first principles — ask “why,” challenge assumptions, and be proactive in learning unfamiliar concepts.
Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of foundational electrical concepts (Ohm’s law, AC/DC circuits, power electronics fundamentals).
• Experience using common lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies).
• Ability to read and analyze electrical schematics and PCB layouts (Altium, KiCad, EasyEDA, etc.).
• Exposure to electrical simulation or modeling tools (LTspice, PLECS, MATLAB, etc.).
• Strong communication skills, time management, and willingness to take initiative.
• Curious mindset - comfortable asking questions, diving deep into problems, and learning quickly in a hands-on lab environment.
Bonus Qualifications:
• Exposure to programming languages such as C or C++, and willingness to learn scripting for test automation.
• Coursework or project experience in power electronics (DC-DC converters, rectifiers, inverters, etc.).
• Exposure to hardware communication protocols (CAN, SPI, I²C) or microcontroller platforms (STM32, Arduino, etc.).
• Familiarity with data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB) for validating measurements.
What You’ll Gain:
• Real-world experience testing and validating high-voltage power conversion systems.
• End-to-end exposure to test system design - from concept to deployment.
• Hands-on engineering experience in MV labs and production environments.
• Mentorship from engineers across hardware, firmware, reliability, and test teams.
• Opportunity to impact critical infrastructure technologies at scale.
Please note: This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.
Compensation: Up to $50/hour
