AMP is hiring a Yard Jockey, Tractor Trailer in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Yard jockeys are at the center of logistics operations, responsible for the precise maneuvering of empty and full trailers.  Perform preoperational safety checks, docking and parking the trailers in tight spaces. The Yard Jockey usually consists of moving 45ft and 51ft containers to and from throughout the yard at the plant. 

As our Yard Jockey, you will work to:

  • Safely operate and maneuver tractor-trailers within the facility yard, transporting trailers between onsite warehouses and designated locations.
  • Skillfully back tractor-trailers into tight spaces, loading docks, and designated parking areas with precision and attention to safety.
  • Position and dock trailers as needed to support daily operations.
  • Safely connect, disconnect, and reposition trailers.
  • Inspect trailers, containers, and equipment for damage or safety concerns.
  • Perform routine yard checks to ensure trailers and equipment are properly positioned.
  • Complete necessary delivery forms, inspection reports, and other required paperwork.
  • Clean trucks and maintain a clean, organized yard.
  • Keep the yard clear of debris, trash, and potential safety hazards.

Please Note: This is a strictly onsite position. All tractor-trailer operations take place within the facility property. No public road or over-the-road driving is required.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience safely operating and maneuvering full-size tractor-trailers, including backing trailers into tight spaces and loading docks.
  • An active Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is not required, as all tractor-trailer operations are performed exclusively onsite, with no public road or over-the-road driving.
  • Strong tractor-trailer backing, parking, and positioning skills, with the ability to navigate confined areas safely and efficiently.
  • Experience safely coupling and uncoupling trailers.
  • Excellent spatial awareness, judgment, and attention to safety when operating large equipment around buildings, personnel, and other vehicles.
  • Good physical stamina and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including connecting and disconnecting trailers and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail when inspecting equipment, performing yard checks, and completing required documentation.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining a safe and organized yard environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of recent experience operating tractor-trailers, yard trucks, or other heavy equipment.
  • Previous experience as a Yard Jockey, Yard Spotter, Trailer Spotter, or Tractor-Trailer Driver.
  • Clean driving record and solid work history.
  • Experience operating a variety of heavy equipment.

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED

Salary & Compensation Information: $18.00 - 22.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM, Tuesday - Friday
  • Overtime available
  • Weekends as needed
