Brief Overview:

As a Principal DevOps Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the architecture, scalability, and reliability of Amwell’s infrastructure and DevOps platforms. You will be responsible for designing and evolving cloud systems that enable product teams to deliver faster, safer, and more predictably. This role demands a blend of hands-on technical leadership and strategic foresight, guiding the organization toward automation, observability, and operational excellence.

You will mentor senior engineers, influence engineering-wide standards, and ensure that Amwell’s platform remains resilient, secure, and cost-efficient. Above all, you will lead by example—transforming complex systems into stable, scalable, and reliable foundations for innovation.

Core Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Architecture and Scale

  • Design and evolve multi-region, multi-account cloud architectures that balance performance, resiliency, and compliance.
  • Define long-term strategies for compute, networking, and storage systems across AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Partner with SRE and product teams to improve scalability, latency, and fault tolerance.
  • Anticipate challenges in complex systems and proactively shape architecture for long-term stability.

Automation and Delivery Systems

  • Architect and maintain enterprise-grade CI/CD frameworks supporting hundreds of daily deployments.
  • Champion Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Ansible, and other automation tools.
  • Drive a culture of reliability through blue-green, canary, and feature-flag deployment strategies.
  • Ensure automation practices enhance both speed and sustainability.

Observability and Reliability

  • Establish organization-wide observability standards using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or OpenTelemetry.
  • Define and maintain SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets that align with product goals.
  • Build and mentor an incident response culture focused on learning and continuous improvement.
  • Develop resilient systems capable of maintaining stability under pressure.

Security, Compliance, and Governance

  • Embed security and compliance automation across delivery pipelines from development to production.
  • Ensure adherence to HIPAA, SOC2, and internal governance standards.
  • Drive zero-trust principles and supply chain hardening across infrastructure layers.
  • Promote compliance as an integral aspect of architectural integrity.

Cost and Performance Optimization

  • Lead FinOps initiatives aligning cloud spend with measurable business value.
  • Implement predictive scaling and anomaly detection to optimize performance and cost efficiency.
  • Create visibility frameworks that tie operational decisions to financial outcomes.

Leadership and Influence

  • Serve as a technical authority and mentor across DevOps, SRE, and platform teams.
  • Define engineering-wide patterns for automation, reliability, and release governance.
  • Lead architecture reviews and design sessions, providing clarity and direction.
  • Partner with executives to align infrastructure strategies with company vision and product goals.

Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or Infrastructure Engineering, including 5+ years in a senior or principal role.
  • Deep expertise with AWS (ECS, EKS, RDS, Lambda, Route 53, CloudWatch, KMS).
  • Advanced proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation).
  • Strong command of CI/CD automation and large-scale release orchestration.
  • Extensive understanding of distributed systems, networking, and data reliability.
  • Proven success implementing observability frameworks and incident response systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to shape engineering culture focused on automation, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical depth into executive clarity.

Additional information

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
