Commercial Legal Specialist, Growth
About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
Anthropic is seeking an exceptional Commercial Legal Specialist to support our commercial and technology transactions while driving cross-functional program management initiatives. You'll help review, draft, and negotiate commercial contracts. You’ll also build scalable contracting processes, implement metrics tracking systems, and serve as a key liaison between legal and business teams for our cutting-edge AI systems.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain a cross-commercial legal team triage system to prioritize and route incoming contract requests effectively
- Coordinate legal diligence workflows during investment rounds, including document collection, review tracking, and issue resolution to ensure thorough risk assessment and timely deal execution
- Design and implement data tracking systems to measure KPIs across the commercial legal function, including cycle times, volume metrics, and risk assessment scoring
- Draft, analyze, negotiate, and complete complex commercial transactions with enterprise customers, vendors, and strategic partners, including IP licensing agreements
- Develop and maintain a centralized knowledge repository of contract templates, playbooks, and negotiation guidelines
- Create standardized reporting and dashboards to provide leadership visibility into commercial legal operations and performance
- Collaborate with Product, Sales, Finance, Business Operations, Research, and Procurement teams to achieve key business objectives while delivering strategic, business-minded solutions
- Identify process improvement opportunities and lead implementation of efficiency initiatives
You might be a good fit if you:
- Have experience operating in a fast-paced technology startup in which priorities shift rapidly and schedules "move to the left." You thrive in this dynamic environment and pride yourself on your adaptability
- Possess strong project management skills with the ability to define clear workflows, set milestones, and track progress across multiple workstreams
- Are comfortable with data analysis and can translate legal metrics into actionable business insights
- Understand what's important in the context of a contract, the organization's mission, when to be flexible, and when to draw a hard line
- Are excited to grow with an organization and help shape the culture of the commercial function
- Prefer straightforward, concise explanations to legalese and overwrought drafting
- Have a knack for identifying and implementing efficient processes and policies
- Thrive as a member of cross-functional teams building frontier technologies and want to develop a deep understanding of our technical teams
- Are comfortable operating outside your areas of expertise and in uncharted legal territory
- Are a "doer" and willing to roll up your sleeves to get things done, whether the work is glamorous or not
Strong candidates may have:
- 5+ years of related contract management experience (including reading and drafting contracts), with at least 3 years of experience supporting technology transactions, sales organizations, or partnerships
- Experience designing and implementing legal operations programs and metrics tracking systems
- Background in managing cross-functional initiatives involving legal, business, and technical teams
- Experience supporting diligence processes for fundraising or M&A activities
- Proven ability to collaborate across various organizational levels and functions while building strong relationships
- Substantive knowledge of software agreements, reseller agreements, services agreements, strategic partnerships, and general contract terms
- Experience with contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems and legal operations technology
- Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
- Authentic integrity and a deep understanding of the importance of ethics in business

We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
