New Product Introduction (NPI) Sourcing Manager, Data Center Power & Cooling

Remote-Friendly, United States

About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

Anthropic is building AI compute at a scale and pace that outruns what off-the-shelf data center equipment was designed for. Much of the power and cooling equipment behind our next campuses — battery energy storage systems (BESS), grid-forming and grid-following inverters, solid-state transformers (SST), E-STATCOM and other power-quality devices, medium-voltage switchgear, UPS, and liquid-cooling systems — is either new to the market, new to the supplier, or being built at a volume the supplier has never shipped before.

The NPI Engineer owns the path from "the supplier has a design" to "the equipment is qualified, manufacturable at rate, and running reliably on site." You sit between our electrical and mechanical design teams, our supply chain and quality teams, and the supplier's engineering and factory organizations, and you make sure every new product or major variant clears the gates — EVT, DVT, PVT, FAT, SAT — before it is trusted with production load. This is a hands-on role: you will spend real time on supplier factory floors, in test labs, and at site commissioning.

What you'll do

  • Own the NPI program for each new power or cooling product (BESS, inverters, SST, E-STATCOM, MV switchgear, UPS, CDUs, chillers) from concept selection through ramp, including the gate schedule, exit criteria, and risk register.

  • Drive early supplier design engagement: translate our site requirements (fault current, grid interconnection, harmonic and ride-through requirements, thermal envelopes, footprint, serviceability) into product requirements and specifications the supplier can build to, and negotiate trade-offs with their engineering teams.

  • Lead DFM/DFT/DFx reviews with suppliers so designs are manufacturable at the rate we need, testable in the factory, and serviceable in the field.

  • Plan and run prototype and pilot builds: define EVT/DVT/PVT scope and sample counts, witness builds, own test plans (type testing, HALT/HASS, thermal, EMC, protection coordination, functional and integration tests), and drive root cause and corrective action on every failure.

  • Qualify the product for deployment: define and execute first-article inspection, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and integrated system testing with the rest of the electrical and cooling chain, and sign off on production readiness.

  • Hand off to steady state: transfer qualified products, control plans, test procedures, and known-issue lists to the Manufacturing Quality and Supply Chain Delivery teams, and support them through the first production ramps.

  • Build the reliability picture: run FMEA/DFMEA with suppliers, define reliability targets and burn-in requirements, and feed field failure data back into the next revision.

  • Coordinate cross-functionally with design engineering, construction, commissioning, utilities/interconnection, safety, and sourcing so NPI schedules are integrated with campus delivery schedules.

  • Keep suppliers honest: track readiness and risk with clear metrics, escalate early, and hold technical reviews that resolve issues rather than admire them.

You may be a good fit if you have

  • 8+ years of engineering experience in power electronics, electrical equipment, or industrial energy systems, with at least 4 years in an NPI, product development, or product engineering role that owned a product from prototype through production ramp.

  • Direct, hands-on experience with at least two of: BESS, utility- or data-center-scale inverters, medium-voltage transformers or switchgear, UPS, STATCOM/power-quality equipment, or liquid cooling systems (CDUs, chillers, hydronics).

  • Working knowledge of the relevant standards and how they get applied in qualification: UL 9540/9540A, UL 1741 and IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, IEC 62477 / IEC 62909, IEEE C37 and C57 series, NFPA 70/855, UL 1778, and comparable IEC equivalents.

  • Experience defining and executing structured qualification programs (EVT/DVT/PVT, FAT/SAT, type testing, reliability testing) and closing failures with disciplined root cause analysis and CAPA.

  • Familiarity with supplier factory environments — production lines, test bays, quality systems — and the ability to assess a supplier's real readiness to ship at rate.

  • Fluency in design-for-manufacturing and design-for-test principles and the supplier ECO/change-control process.

  • Strong systems thinking: you can reason about how an inverter, a battery, a transformer, and a cooling loop behave together at a site, not just in isolation.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort driving decisions across engineering, supply chain, and executive audiences.

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or power engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • Willingness to travel 30–40% to supplier factories and data center sites, including internationally.

Strong candidates may also have

  • Experience with solid-state transformers, grid-forming inverters, E-STATCOM, or other emerging power-conversion equipment being introduced to data center or utility applications for the first time.

  • NPI or product engineering experience at a hyperscaler, a large utility-scale developer, or a Tier-1 power equipment OEM.

  • Background in grid interconnection studies, protection coordination, or power-system modeling (PSCAD, ETAP, PSS/E, or similar).

  • Liquid cooling product introduction experience — CDU, rear-door heat exchanger, direct-to-chip, or immersion systems.

  • Reliability engineering credentials (CRE, Six Sigma) or experience running HALT/HASS programs.

  • Firmware and controls validation experience for power conversion equipment (inverter control loops, BMS, EMS, PLC/SCADA integration).

  • Experience standing up or scaling new supplier manufacturing lines, including contract manufacturing and international sites.

In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit anthropic.com/careers directly for confirmed position openings.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Come work with us!

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. Agreement to Arbitrate

I understand and agree that both Anthropic and I waive our respective rights to trial by jury in connection with any claims covered by this agreement to arbitrate. Instead, any disputes arising out of or related to my application for employment with Anthropic shall be settled by final and binding arbitration pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act. I understand and agree that Anthropic’s employees/agents, Anthropic’s clients, and their employees/agents are third-party beneficiaries to this agreement.

The arbitration shall be conducted in accordance with the Employment Arbitration Rules & Procedures of Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc. (“JAMS Rules”), available via the internet at https://www.jamsadr.com/rules-employment-arbitration or by searching for “JAMS Employment Arbitration Rules” in an online search service such as www.google.com. To the extent the JAMS Rules are inconsistent with the terms of this Agreement, this Agreement shall govern to the extent permitted by law. The parties will select one neutral arbitrator, who will have the authority to award all relief in law or equity that is requested by the parties and supported by credible, relevant, and admissible evidence. The arbitrator shall allow adequate discovery and issue a written, signed, and reasoned award. Judgement may be entered on the arbitrator’s award in any court having jurisdiction, and the award shall be subject to correction, confirmation, or vacation as provided by the applicable law concerning judicial review of arbitration awards. Anthropic will bear the costs that are particular to the arbitration, such as the arbitrator fees. The arbitrator will apply the substantive law of the state in which I sought employment with Anthropic. The arbitrator will determine the arbitration venue, based on fairness and convenience to the parties and witnesses, unless otherwise mutually agreed upon by the parties. The Party initiating a claim under this Agreement must make a written demand for arbitration to the other Party. The demand for arbitration shall identify the claims asserted, the facts upon which such claims are based, and any relief or remedy sought. Written demand for arbitration to Anthropic must be sent to Anthropic PBC at arbdemands@anthropic.com. Anthropic’s demand for arbitration shall be sent to the most recent mailing address and/or email address that Anthropic has on file for you.

This agreement to arbitrate does not apply to claims for workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation benefits, claims or charges before any administrative agency having jurisdiction over such claims, or any other claim that is not subject to arbitration under federal law. If any claims are deemed non-arbitrable, then those claims will be stayed until resolution of any arbitrable claims.

I understand and agree that, except where prohibited by federal law, all claims subject to this agreement to arbitrate must be pursued on an individual basis, and that both I and Anthropic waive any right to bring or be a party to any class or collective action. I agree that any issues pertaining to the enforceability, application or validity of this agreement to arbitrate shall be decided only by a court of competent jurisdiction and not by an arbitrator. This agreement to arbitrate applies only in the United States.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.

How do you know if you have a disability?
